drooley.gif WHERE DO I SIGN UP??????

That looks like such a blast.

Being able to powerslide is a function of two things:Power and friction/traction. We don't have much of the former in a stock 914, but you can make up for that be decreasing the latter. smile.gif

Ice racing? I know its popular in some places.
buhs914
This type of driving looks almost natural for the 914. i bet it's a blast!! I'd be too afraid of rust issues from the melted snow stuck in places.
Socalandy

Socalandy

Nope. The video title says:

"Test drive for the Rally Monte Carlo - Porsche 914/6 GT 24 hours of Daytona"

just to clarify - this video doesn't show the original Sunoco GT
it's a clone, built by "Mittelmotor" (German 914 Specialist)

Snow getting into places won't cause rust, it will melt and behave no differently than if you drove in the rain, salt is the enemy and we northern folk have to deal with it all the time. When there is a chance of salt that is usually when we put our teeners away, as far as that type of driving, we do that on the way to the grocery store! First storm of the year there is always a few fender benders especially people with a couple of years on their all season tires. I have participated/taught in a few winter driving programs and it is a blast and actully does make you a better driver, you don't get freaked out when your car loses traction in the rain for eg. Ya gotta love winter where I live cause if ya don't then you shouldn't live here!

Not quite. Water from melted snow has less surface tension than rain water and is able to penetrate smaller cracks in your undercoating or paint that rain water can't.

But i agree, the real enemy is salt!

It looks like the car has a little heat too!

I've always wanted to do this with a 914. When I was a kid me and a couple friends would do laps in frozen parking lots. My weak old Pinto was actually pretty good at sliding around with the tail out.

That's a blast to watch. The 914 is the one car not spinnning around!

P.s. Why did all of these cars use steel wheels?

My 914 is a DD, and I love driving it in the snow. Its all about being smooth (and the Blizzaks help quite a bit too).

As far as the salt is concerned, I figure that I've restored the car once already; adding a little more metal and paint down the line won't hurt. Cars are only original once, after that they are meant to be driven. biggrin.gif

Because you want thin wheels and thin tires in the snow.

Yea, I was about to comment that the original car was recently owned by the late Gary Wigglesworth in PA and sold ...... maybe 2 yrs ago shortly after he passed and Translog ..... shut down? down-sized? .... I saw the original at Summit Point and Hershey a couple of times. My Holy Grail... drooley.gif
