Has anyone ever successfully towed a teener on an open trailer with a car cover? If so how did you do it and what did you use? I'm worried about the track car I'm building being in the elements (rain) when towing, especially on long trips. Budget doesn't allow for an enclosed trailer this year.

Nope .... Unless you have a heavy duty custom one made that ties down really tight.

We towed open for many years .... the car will dry out.

I have tried it. I used a rectangular tarp, the synthetic silver/gray ones tied down really well, ad tightened along the way. The thing was shredded by the time I got to the destination (>1000 miles). The other time, i got a roll of that shrink wrap tat movers use, or that pallets are wrapped wit, and wrapped the car just to keep things from flying out of the open cockpit. I think that any tarp would get shredded pretty baddly at highway speeds, and if you want your paint to last, I'd skip it!

Don't do it. When I worked for Volkswagon-Audi and was on the New Beetle project, we would tow broken bugs back with a cover on them, so people couldn't see them. The paint was ruined on every one of them from the covers buffeting against the cars.

One of Perrys cockpit covers might work, but I'm not sure.

NO. Not on the 914 or the Donzi. Alway left marks on the finish.

The road salt always made my worry more then the rain !!

I towed with a cover on a 914 and like has been said, the flapping rubbed off some paint.......

The only way I can see of protecting the cockpit from rain would be a custom made tonneau cover that uses turnbuckles rather than snaps. It's just money.

Modify one of the tent style garages to bolt down on your trailer.
With a decent setup and some good tie downs, it should hold.

Dont let a tarp or car cover touch your paint...it will ruin it in only a few miles.

My 914 Umbrella Cover WON'T work. Might help when you are braking though, cause it opens up like a parachute!

Have never covered my teener, period. I have however packed more machine tools for shipment then I care to admit. We pad all the corners with old carpet or foam. Plastic visqueen (spelling) over the top, then shrink wrap (stretch wrap) around and over as best we can. Key with this stuff is to take clear packing tape and go around and over to keep the shrink wrap from blowing off on the trucks. Seems like A lot of work for a car IMO. BTW, i won't even tow the boat with the "travel cover" on.

I've been towing an open trailer and race teener for over a decade.
the current car has no windows, and its been about 7 years so far...

we tow to Oklahoma, Texas, Nebraska, and Kansas every year
(p.s. its guaranteed to rain every time you go to Oklahoma)

just take towels.
no way on the cover.
plan on drying it out every day anyways just from humidity half the time

For my race car I have a extra large plastic bag to put over the race seat. That's about it. rather have a wet car than one with no paint on all the corners.

The very tough heat shrink seen on big boats would work very well but what a pain.

Back in the day I had a custom cover made for my 73 Vette. I THOUGHT I would be smart and use it while transporting on an open trailer to a show. While going down I 94 the front came off and it acted like a big ol parachute and ripped it the rest of the way off. The straps "F"ed up my high dollar paint job and the cover did a great job of wrapping around my buddies car that was following. He didnt hit anything before he got stopped but it could have been real bad.

Towing with a cover on the car is against the law in some states.
