I think that was just thrown in the trunk - doesn't look like a 914 part to me..

Looks like something from a late 50's to early 60's American car. Possibly a battery tray for a late 50's truck.
Not real sure though

I believe you're all correct. There is a homemade battery tray in the car. I think maybe it was being concidered as a candidate. Thanks

Looks like a heat shield that goes between rocker cover and muffler on a Corvair.
Here's an excerpt from Clark's Corvair Parts online catalog... Note the diagram in the center...
