so have one of the "umbrella" covers from this board
and have so so cover for in garage
Looking at "real" covers $300+
Is $250 to $400 really the price for a good cover?
What cover do you recommend?
How much do I need to pay for a "good" cover?

If you use a car cover make damn sure the car is clean, it's not windy and no dust gets under the cover. Car cover + wind + dust = color sanding you don't want.

Take a look at the options from Coverking. (Link) I bought the "stormproof" custom-fit for a 914 from Autopartswarehouse.com (search for part # C37CVC2SP98PR2568).
Satisfied with it so far, but most of the time it's on the car inside an open-sided carport, so it's not really being tested.

Stormproof is the best I've had. Now they're on all my cars and my bike.
Search... there was a thread on this subject 2 months ago or so.

I've been through a bunch of shitty ones before I landed on these... if that tells you anything.

Where are you primarily storing the car? That's a big factor.

Coverking makes a 914 fitted cover. Best I've ever had and the car is outside a lot. Minor gripe. No Mirror pocket. Have to fold the mirror in.

Autopartswarehouse has the 914-fitted Stormproof for $241. Search the part number I posted above.

I'm in agreement with the full cover........Unless you can get a Porsche correct script full cover!! for the 914..they are not cheap, not sure what they cost now....but I'm happy with the 1 I have
P.S they have the pocket's for the outside mirrors!
