putting the front suspension back in the car and the driver side front A-arm mount wont line up. all the other bolts are in , but this one seems to need to go back towards the back of the car. all the bushings are new and are compressed in as far as they can go.
also, i think one of the threads in the body is stripped. what size bolt do i need , the ones i have are 20mm but the aa catalogue says they should be 30mm

Well, for sure you need to be careful with that potentially stripped thread. If you are unable to get a bolt started in it, you will need to weld in a piece from another car.

hey mike, how are you? spoke to leo yesterday, still 3 kids and holding.
but i digress. the hole on the right in the pic is the one that's not lining up, it's the one on the right that stripped. would it be easier to manuever with the torsion bars out?

May I point out that the good doctor was a "thailor" himself in the Coast Guard. He drives a Subaru, and he is into trannies.

Your honor, I rest my case.

Rich, good to see you back here - I have nothing to add on your current problem ( for a change :-) ), just wanted to say Hi.
My current project is a refresh on a 330bhp Euro model 928 - makes the 914 seem like i'm driving a baby carriage!
Good luck on the teener.

Do yourself a favor.
Drop the rear bolts out first.
lower everything.
Get a tap and chase the threads on the front holes. (and clean them of rust...and paint them you fool...use a brush)
Jack everything back up and put the FRONT bolts in first....and make sure they are loose.
Then put the two big rear bolts in.

You could be getting hung up on the steering shaft also if you have the rack bolted in place already....so unbolt that and let it slide around while you get the a arms hooked up first.

Sway bar...unbolt it
Top of strut...unbolt it.
The first bolts need to be the a arm bolts.
Start at the front (did I repeat that)
The the rear...you can lever the rear easier.
Then the top of the strut
Then the steering rack (after the a arms are tight)

Sage advise... A set of tap and dies can be expensive but, I've used them a lot on my projects.

Use a thread chaser, do not use a tap. Taps can cut out some of the existing threads and cause a loose fit. A set of thread chasers are inexpensive.
