Starting at $47k for the new 914? I wonder what the 914 was priced at in todays dollars, I would think $25-30k max...
The 914-4 was only a couple of Gs less than the cheapest 911; the 914-6 even closer. If it had never gone out of production it would be right where the Boxster/Cayman is now.
Funny thing .... just last night on the way back from dropping the BMW off at the shop last night, my son & I were doing this very calculation on my 73 2L when he asked what it would be worth today!
As a general rule of thumb, historically inflation just about doubles prices every decade - so we figured that my 8-72 & 11-72 sold 914-2.0 which was priced dealer sticker was $5,299 West Coast POE/Shipping - not counting tinted glass & CA emissions test, so that went as follows:
72-82 $5,300 > $10,600
82-92 $10,600 > $21,200
92-02 $21,200 > $42,400 ... (IIRC the Boxster or S was about $45k then)
02-12 $42,400 > $84,800
... so 2010 +/- $76,320 today ... (which is about where the Boxster or S is today)
As to a $30K Baby Boxster, 356-1 Redux or 914 Redux ... well it would have to be a super stripped down model, but probably a necessary entry base model - or maybe at $35k (give them some room Mike!
).
IMHO - I think if they offered a range of base through more upscale ones for the $35k to $55k, then they could sell quite a few with a respectable profit margin , while pulling in new Porsche enthusiasts for later move-up purchases - although they may have to squeeze the margin a bit right now on everything in their line-up due to the down economy, unless their new owners VW can be happy with only around 100k units in annual sales as they had in 2009 (per last Panorama).
... and the beat goes on .... !!!!
