I'm looking for my first 914, will be a weekend driver. While I understand that any 35 year old car (or any car really) will require parts, work, and maintenance, I am NOT looking for a giant resto project, a racer, a candidate for a 6 conversion, etc....just looking to have some fun on sunny days with my beautiful wife.

I have wanted a 914 ever since i was in high school, and now i've got some cash to get one!

What do you guys think of this one? It's in vermont. I am quasi-local in boston, MA (3 hr drive) so I can go to check it out...

Link: http://bit.ly/cMctfw

I asked him for some add'l pics of floor pans and engine bay, here they are:

Its a high price, even for the northeast.
at 8500 the car should be the original color and have all the rust fixed...

Ifr this guiy knows 914's like he says he does he'd send pics of the longs without asking. Call me suspicious.

I picked one up this year with NO visible rust (there's always rust hiding somewhere on these damned things) and a sorted engine for $2k this year. Same year as the EBAY option. There's a huge difference in price, something's up.

Great info, thanks rohar. I might drive up and check it out just to do it, but will def keep looking about.

Just my opinion, but I see red flags everywhere! And, this is, as staed y opnion!

The primary 914 has been badly repainted to silver, which dtracts from its value. F & R inner trunk panels repainted black, probably for a reason - loke to hide rust & blemishes. So, you have a tri-color, non-original car to start with. The "factory" wheels are NOT. Appear to be American Racing knockoffs.
Quite frankly, with the pics supplied, the owner doesn't wany you to see anything clearly.

Now, to the "free" second car. Color "could" be factory ($300 option in '72), but his statement that "the carberator (before they put in fuel injection" is bogus & proves that he knows nothing about 914's. Unless it is a Euro early 914, it had FI.

Look, the 75 is a dubious "project". The '72 is a throw away.

My opinion? Run far away! This is a $2500 914, WITH the spare car!

Now, with all that behind us, let's discuss 914 ownership......

If you're willing to pay $8500 for one, you can get a pretty nice driver. But recognize that these are OLD cars! They are going to eat up some weekends maintaining them (which is fun for most of us). Some things (most) you can do yourself, but others require professional help, and the pros are not on every street corner. All I'm saying here is - buy right - buy books & tools - find a curmodgeon mechanic (valve adjustments are frequent & backbreaking, though easy & necessary). Know what you're getting into. And, know that you have a wealth of info & support from this site!

Don't be afraid. Just be aware! These cars are enormous fun!

Pass on it for that kind of money. Be patient and for $8,500.00, you'll find a very nice car now adays.

All I have to say is, thank you all and thank heaven for this forum. all of these replies within a 1/2 hour of a noob's post!!

I will definitely hold out for the right car -- and with all your help i'm sure i'll find it.

Here is a beautiful original car for 12K, so you can have a comparison. Would have to factor in shipping too. It's also posted here. I seen a 1.7 that looked pretty decent in Long Island that was posted on Craigslist. Didn't get a reply from the poster. Maybe do a search there, and contact them by the posted number.

Run and run fast my man... all the way down to the original interior and dash in the 72???

Guy does not know shit about 914's... cripes I am no expert and I can see in a brief glance at least 20 things wrong with both cars.

Stick with the guys here to find your car bud. Check out camp914...across the country but it would be well worth the enjoyable road trip at your price range.
friendlyjoe
Simply put- way overpriced. You should be in plum 2.0L territory for that sum. I suggest you might start watching the Mart in the Porsche Club of America's "Porsche Panorama" monthly publication and check the local PCA chapter's publication as well. For the most part, well-maintained 914s in there owned by more knowledgeable and conscientious owners than you're likely to find on eBay. Most of the eBay fodder has been sullied in one way or another. Just saying. I wish I'd seen this last fall. I sold a beautiful, tight 2.0 with 73K real miles on the clock for $6500. Deals CAN be found.
Be patient and thorough.

Happy hunting!

Joe

Oh, helllllll no! I love the Porche hat prop on the seat. Thats not even worth $2500 in my book. Any 914 guy selling his car would post pics of the rust prone areas. The fact that he avoided showing any of them throws a big red flag in my book. Like Pat said the second car is a throw away. The first is a coin toss away from a parts car.

agree.gif with all that above - 2 piles of rust waiting to powder! mad.gif

IMHO - I'd stay away from cars on the evil-bay, cuz too many folks get stuck with crap on there with little or no recourse. Cars - & 914s especially - need in person hands on contact to know wtf you're getting! dry.gif

Does anyone know whatever happened to than nice Zambezi 74 2l in NC that someone on here was selling for the PO's widow & then took it on himself?? confused24.gif
http://www.914world.com/bbs2/index.php?act...=20&t=97475

... also this nice Alaska Blue 74 2L in CO is now gone - is it sold or just "timed out" from our classifieds? confused24.gif
http://www.914world.com/bbs2/index.php?act...20&t=103673

Those 2 could be good candidates for you too, although IIRC it was $10-12.5k asking.

IIRC you were originally thinking $4-6K, but this green/silver/black with the rust holed floor pans is almost $9k - so let's expand the search .....

In addition to the ones above, also try some of these links on 914world below & read the groups comments at each too (no affiliation with any of these), & all need a thorough check out:

Note that some of these above are from my old sved links for comp cars or other members looking, and may have sold or been taken off the market since.

Also try on TheSamba.com under Porsches (cars FS/WTB), & you can put in a notify me for 914's FS on Lycos within your prescribed area.

And if it's a CA 914, you & your lovely wife fly out here (Southwest is cheap from Providence), pick it up & team driving-girl.gif driving.gif it home via the WCR in Tahoe for the group Teener meet & home to Baaaston! biggrin.gif
.. similar fun drive if it's elsewhere in the US!

Be patient & look for the right one, so you & "the boss" don't get burned on your first one! smile.gif

I'm I blind or is that a rust through hole in the 2nd pic? And if the seat belt bolt is rusted up that high I wonder if the ebrake is froze on the post. Pat nailed it. These fantastic little cars require alot of attention. It's like having another wife. Oh yea, way too much $.
Dr Evil
You would be better off buying from one of our reputable folks here and shipping or flying out to get it somewhere not close, but not in the rust belt smile.gif

No...there are a few that are really clean and in the 7-9k range.
none of the lower priced ones seem worth the effort.

I did not find any easy ones today, but I was really busy at work and I had no time to call around for you. I will try tomorrow.

Rich, I did get the PM from Drew, he's not quite ready to sell, he said maybe closer to summer.

Dude... seriously... two things.

Use the assets here...like Rich... a standup guy as you alerady know.

Second... look west young man... if you are in the position to spend that kind of money you can get a nice west coast car and bring it back here to rust coast.

www.camp914.com Craig is a most upstanding guy and if he does not have it he will come across it shortly.

Thanks td.

not going to lie, buying a car sight unseen freaks me out a bit. But it's not like these cars grow on trees and there are many skilled and knowledgeable individuals willing to help me out...

Secretly I want to get a local car because it will give me an excuse to use my pickup to trailer it back to my house.

Because what would be more awesome than trailering my new 914 back to my house with my pickup?

the answer is: nothing. nothing at all.

We did that once, she's from Seattle (your neck of the woods). We're actually thinking of moving back to PNW and I considered waiting until that move to purchase...but she cleared the funding now and I need to strike while the iron is hot!!

theres alot of nice 914`s on the west coast ...for 85 hundy you can find a very nice car ..theres non in the local PCA mag"Spiel" i just looked ...there are some in the national PCA mag "Panorama" i remember looking at them but no longer have that copy

I really don't think it will be easy to get a east coast car that will be as rust free as a cali car. It would be worth 2k to get a car that doesn't need rust repair and that should cover a plane ticket and a nice ride back home or just get it shipped. Rust repair by a good shop can easily go over 2k.

Now probably is a good time to buy one though. I would try Rich's friend and any others he knows first though.

The color change alone kills the car for the price.
