Ok JP, what's the speed formula? How do you get that back-end to stick like that? (Jump in Brad, any time.)

My front end is planted solid, but I can't keep the back-end under me. Above 15mph its loose under all conditions. Went to autocross school last week & had a blast, but instructors both said car would be faster if not so loose & I agree. Hard to get close to the limit in slalom without doing tank-slappers. Trail-braking at high speed feels like the back isn't even on the ground. Do I need to move to a bigger front bar (Tarret)?

Suggestions appreciated.

Here's my setup: (engine is still just a 1.7)

Front:
Koni Yellows (911 valved)
19mm front bar - full hard
21mm torsion bars
'A' calipers on vented rotors
225/50 on 7x16 (street rubber: Dunlop SP8000)
-1.5 camber, 6 caster, 0 toe

Rear:
Bilsteins
180# springs
no bar (of course)
'A' calipers on vented rotors
245/45 on 8x16 (street rubber: Dunlop SP8000)
-1.75 camber, slight toe-in (forget exact amt.)

Will try to have race rubber and Mueller-bearings next year.

Tarret all the way.

I tell people EVERY day not to buy a 19mm front bar. You will out grow it in less than 3 AutoX events.

Stiffen the front to plant the rear. You are out driving the current setup. Either install larger torsion bars up front or buy the Tarret (from me...LOL)

Thanks for jumping in Brad. It's funny. When I first got the 19mm bar I had it set almost all the way loose and understeered all the time. Pretty soon I wasn't understeering any more and had to stiffen the bar to keep it neutral. A few months later I had to stiffen it again. Pretty soon I was running full-stiff and still no understeer. Now I've run out of bar and it's loose all the time.

I wanted to get some solid advice because if I remeber correctly JP is running 21mm torsion bars (like me) and the Tarret bar (32mm hollow?), but had to then go to 250# rear springs (or higher!). I'm hoping for a setup that works with the 180# springs because I don't really want to go stiffer in the rear. This is my daily driver after-all.

What do you think?

Seems only fair. You're the one here passing out the advice. You should get the business. Rich needs to know that all the time you spend on the computer IS actually good for business and not a total waste of time.

Head down to the next Portland AX. I went last Sunday. Give it a try and get JP to take you for a ride. He loves to use it as a sales pitch for a bad ass six. (I hate the idea he's planted). My car only resembles his car in name. His was just incredible.

The course was short and not confusing and the people were really great.

It wasn't all beauty and grace. He managed to get pointed the wrong way too. I think he told me he was on track tires so thay were a little loose fr a while.

give me an ftp account and I'll post some of my movies for you in mpg/avi/wmf/divx if you want. I can't convert those quicktime movies, but I can post a couple of mine if you want. Not as exciting as a v8 or a big six, but if you speed it up and make motor noises it might improve the experience. he he

It's not really a sales tool,(I gots nuthin' for sale) but I figure if a 914 guy comes down for an AX they ought to have the chance to go for a ride.....if they get visions of sugar plums dancing in their heads .....not my problem

Your set up "shouldn't" make your car all that loose, but I hate to give advice here. My set up is similar....but with stiffer springs in back (225) and I go from push to loose dependent on speed...low speed push. When the motor is on the cam, push is never a problem In a 30 pace slalom, the back end wants to lead. When the tires are cold, it's prolly similar to having street tires on....I'm all over the place.

BTW, not all tires like negative camber. I'd do some tire temps first chance you get.

Quicktime rules. WMP sux dead donkey

Quicktime is better for highres stuff, like animations and video for dvd & editing, but wmv's rule for webstuff!

don't care much for WMP or WMDs ...

don't have QuickTime.

but i do have over 1.5 GB of Mpegs on my box
