I have to get some paint on my hood. The previous owner (before my dad) had the whole hood skimmed with bondo. It has been chipping off and exposing bare metal. I have to remove it so what is the easiest or best way of re-mounting the hood onto it's hinges in the correct location? It lines up great now!

I wouldn't worry about the re-alingment. The front hood is pretty easy to line back up again. Have two people, lightly snug the bolts, slow push hood down, eyeball, eyeball, lift up, adjust, repeat. Usually only takes a couple of adjustments and presto!

ditto that , not hard to re-align, I pull them all the time and never mark them.

if you want a felt tip pen works.

for real tricky hoods (not the 914 front) folks some times drill small holes to place dowl pins in to relocate teh hood exactly. but that leaves holes that could loose you a concours prize.

really no worries you will be able to line it up aktion035.gif aktion035.gif aktion035.gif aktion035.gif aktion035.gif

PS use two folks to install and remove hood. Also place some soft towels at each corner of the cowl to act as bumpers in case there is a probelm when setting the lid on the hinges, that protects the cowl and hood edges from getting nicked it is easy to hit teh cowl with the lid corners, so use padding.

I used a center punch and marked a few places on the outside of the hinge and hood

If you're in to it, you can always drive up here and meet me. I'll give you choice of 5 hoods for $75 or trade for other 914 parts. What color is your car?

I like drilling the hole and using a small finishing nail to get it back where it belongs, but the 914 is really pretty easy like the others have said, mines been off at least twice by myself using blankets to protect the cowl and fenders.

Yes....

Its also easier to have a second set of hands to help you lift the hood away...

Before you take the hood off, outline the hinge with blue painters tape and cut with an exacto knife. Assuming you will only be painting the top side, of course.
