Which direction does the piston/cylinder install (Mahle)? There is a little sighn (squiggle arrowed line next to a rectangle) and I forget if that faces to the front of car/engine or to back of car/transmission??

Can't tell you, but all directional marks on VW point to the flywheel.

The squiggle represents the crank and the little box represents the flywheel. Install the piston so that the little picture matches reality. If the little picture has the flywheel on the right, then the actual flywheel should be on the right.
