Porsche Club of America Golden Gate Region is hosting the 3rd annual Mid-Engine Shootout June 12th and 13th at Alameda NAS.

This is an autocross focused on all mid-engine cars produced by Porsche and is event to crown fastest mid-engine Porsche that shows up and runs both days for combined time fastest times from the 2 day event. Usually a few categories. Fastest car, Fastest street car, Fastest driver over 55, etc.

Do you have a friend with a 917 just sitting in a museum? Convince them to come out! We have seen a 908 show up to an autocross before! Do you have an old 914 race car that hasn't seen any action for a few years dust it off and come play with us! Does your neighbor have a Carrera GT, Cayman S, a Boxster or a 914 that you want to help them drive? This is your chance to see how you stack up against the fastest mid engine autocross cars in the West!

This should biggest gathering of mid-engine Porsches at an autocross in California. We had over 60 mid-engine Porsches from all over the West Coast the last time this event was held in California! No PCA membership required if you are driving a Porsche. If you dont have a mid engine Porsche you're welcome to show up in much slower rear or front engine Porsches as well! Get the word out!

Registration for event can be found here and you need to register for both days if you're going to attend the Mid-engine Shootout:

Yes he is a good driver ...and I think I saw him in the Boxsters rear view mirror at his first event with GGR this season. beerchug.gif He's going to need to sharpen up his game if he is going to beat the Barbie mobile.

umm...no, you didn't see him at GGR poke.gif . Plus he's running a tired 2.7. He's a cowboy driver that somedays can pull amazing times out his ass and other times he is way off. If he is coming, and he is on, he will be good competition. aktion035.gif

Yes, he did. Try to keep up, Jon. biggrin.gif
PeeGreen 914
Eric went to GGR this year? I thought he went down last year huh.gif . Oh well, like I said, when he is on he is very fast. If he is off he is WAY off.
DanT
actually Eric has been to a couple of our events this year...
PeeGreen 914
Wow, I wonder why he's been going all the way down there. That's a decent trip. He should be at the AX today so I can find out smile.gif
rhodyguy
when mike was rebushing his car, eric told me he has been to the bay area a few times this past year while working on projects for his employer.
PeeGreen 914
Yeah, I just found out from his wife he is down there until they finish a job. Sounds like he is going to run more events down there this year than he will up here.
fp racer
Not me, I will be at Laguna Seca for round three in Scca. Good luck guys.
koozy
Eric was "ON' yesterday at the zone event AX held at Sears. The car stuck like glue and he was on the hammer more than off. Crazy fast. Y'all better look out cuz if he is on then there is another gun in town and he aint shootin blanks.
koozy
I chatted with him a bit after the event. He says he will be there. BTW: He was sporting a 2009 shootout shirt.....
grantsfo
Yeah Eric isnt bad for a guy in an antique 914. Think my car put a second or two on him the last time Dan and I drove against him. Youre going to need to send in 914 reinforcements stronger than his car if youre going to hold off the Boxster from taking overall win with better AX drivers than me in the cockpit.

Careful or we will send Leeds Gulick down with his scary fast 914 rolleyes.gif Say hi to Eric from all his PNW friends .....careful he`ll talk your ear off biggrin.gif

No need, the local 914 guys been handing him his ass.. ...complete with his head up there. What is it now...0 & 2 lately.
hmeeder
OK, What the Eff?

Gotta have some people commit to the shootout people!

I registered last week and as of now there are only Grant and Evan; me and Sean in the 10JREEN and Scott Miner.

Where the hell are the competitors? The only ones that are talking smack are Grant and Evan and no one is paying any attention to them, anyway. KMA.gif

Doesn't anyone remember the last shootout? That was a full on blast and seeing cars and drivers from all over CA and points North was a real treat.

If there isn't a significant spike in attendence in the next few days, we are going to have to bow out. There's no way I'm driving all the way up from SD to parade around with only a small handful of people.

I know that B isn't here to drive the bus this time around, but someone's got to get on, right!

Time to sac up!
DanT
there will be plenty of folks in attendance...lots of norcal and GGR folks sign up the last 10 days or so, it will pick up in the next week. Plan on there being at least 80 or more people, and of those at least 50% will be midengine cars...
J P Stein
Someone, some where along the line decided the 914 community didn't need an AX competition of their own. Consequently the event was dumbed down to "mid engine"
to include others....I seem to recall one individual that was pushing Boxsters as the next great white dope.
Maybe it was in response to the lack of Ca. attendance when the *914 Shoot Out*
was held outside of the PRC/GGR AX center of he world.....dunno. confused24.gif . Too bad, it was fun while it lasted.
DanT
I was the one that came up with the idea for the first Shootout. You guys had yours last year.
I decided this year to add a little spice to the mix and invite other midengined Porsches to the mix.
Sorry that doesn't sit well with you JP. You are more than welcome to come down and drive Mr.2 if you like.
Depending on how this works out, we may just go back to 914 centric event for next year or the year after.
J P Stein
Don't mind me, Dan. I'm still going thru AX withdrawls. Mr.2 is semi broke and has retired....maybe permanently....but I wouldn't come anyhow....no excuses, just don't have the urge.
DanT
no issues here JP biggrin.gif

what is up with MR2?

I know how you feel. I had that going on quite a bit last year...just could not get motivated...
Building this new car has gotten me a bit more interested in driving competitively again.

Threatening with sending Leeds isn't saying much. He has a car that could easily be TTOD but he isn't driving well. Leeds sucked this weekend and has for much of the year. His car really needs Greg behind the wheel to live up to its reputation of the National winning 914 in FP and that was over 6 or 7 years ago.
PeeGreen 914
Still would like to come but have no car to drive or place to stay biggrin.gif

I see John S and Eric F have formally signed up in 914's. I personally know of more than 15 914 guys and 3 fast Boxster/Caymans capable of being top car of day that are going. I wouldnt look at formal registration at this point as indication of attendance. I see a couple SO Cal people coming up as well. I would suspect we will have well over 20 914's and I know we will have well over 25 Boxsters and Caymans.

I can assure anyone who hasnt driven a GGR event at Alameda that these are by far some of the best events of the year anywhere. Venue is unsurpassed, views of San Francisco are incredible (see pic) and competition mid season in summer is very good. We will see top drivers from all over California. We already have a few SCCA guys that have never driven with GGR planning to drag 914's and Boxsters to the event.

I think we will see very fast day. Andrew B the fastest 914 guy around in one of the fastest 914's is designing the course for the event!

strawman
My car is nowhere near being completed, but I wanna come see the action. Which day is better for checking out the rides and drivers, Saturday or Sunday? I'd do both, but that will dig big time into my wrenching time...

Geoff
DanT
Historically for our two day AX events, Saturday has the biggest turn out and the best competition....
Sunday will probably be good this year since the Alameda site is more or less central for GGR and surrounding regions.
PeeGreen 914
So I guess nobody needs a codriver/ tire warmer confused24.gif

sad.gif
Chris Hamilton
Jon you should ask over at axpaddock, you'll probably find someone there biggrin.gif
PeeGreen 914
Does that mean I have to register at another site? dry.gif
DanT
yes a site that is dedicated to track, AX, hillclimb etc.... biggrin.gif
PeeGreen 914
Most of the reason I don't like these sections of sites is it is mostly all talk and no proof. I tend to stay away from that as I like to let my time speak for itself smile.gif . I'd rather BS with everyone in the garage.
DanT
AXpaddock is all drivers....that actually drive their cars. We have many different marques represented also.
PeeGreen 914
I noticed. Looks like a decent site but I can't do more than one site anymore. Just takes too much time away from work. I'm on there to see if I can find a ride but we do have a local AX that weekend if I don't find anything.

It would be fun to come play in the 914 pool. The 911s are fun but 914s are much more fun aktion035.gif

He never claims to drive fast though. Just his car...which isn't his anymore.

less than a week to go! Boxster is definitely faster than it was two weeks ago! Cant wait for two great days of AX fun!

Who knows......
We went to Packwood yesterday with the OR SCCA.

Thee results were up within 4 hours of the event finish.
You may see the full results from the WCMESO within a week. biggrin.gif

914 domination happened, that's what beerchug.gif

Saturday was a short, narrow course with some heavily coned areas. 97 cars total raced, I was stoked with my performance, getting very close to times from 914-4s with 2.0+ engines and race tires, me with my stock 1.7 and Dunlop street tires.

Andrew B in the Hamilton 914-4 dominated, with a 29.x, while Bill D was second with a 31.5x I think. Eric Fry was right in there, faster than the fastest Boxter or Cayman, which was Evan driving Phat Basterd (Grant's chopped Box). John Seidel, Martin MCGuire, and others arrives with trick 914s that rounded out a top 10. Most of the top 10 were 914s! I had a 33.7 sec fastest run and left feeling super jazzed.

Sunday and we got a longer course. I needed lots of coffee after a fun Saturday night, and due to the slow start kept improving times until the very last run when I posted a 41.45 sec run. Turn-out was down, about 60-70 cars total, and some of those trick 914s were absent (Bill D, where did you go?). Grant and Evan had something break on PB, and didn't run, but Evan stuck around and raced his DD BMW before jumping in Clemson's Spec Box and in 3 runs had a 38.2. Bill C was again at or near top 10 in his light, yellow, 1911 TIV 914 and Eric Fry was smokin! He momentarily grabbed TTOD with a 36.9 , stepped out of his car, and lit a cigarette. But, that was before Andrew B's run group. Andrew hit a low 37 on run 1, then 36s, then was untouched posting times in high and mid 35 secs.

Combined times for the weekend mid-engine racers had Andrew B out front by 2-3 seconds total, and likely Eric Fry in his silver 914-6 next. beerchug.gif

Unfortunately, no group photo or t-shirt this time around dry.gif

Chris was doing some incredible things with his 1.7L car on STREET tires. I was also very impressed that the V8 914 on 205 street tires could get around the course at all let alone put in some blazing fast time. My driving generally sucked this weekend and my frustration and whining levels were at an all time high rolleyes.gif I do however concede that on a tight course the 914 is still king and by a healthy margin.
J P Stein
At the Shoot Out 2008 at Marina I did the basic design on the course....ran opposite directions Sat & Sunday. Dan & Larry nit picked ( biggrin.gif ) out some features out of safety(too fast, they said) concerns but we all agreed on the final outcome. It worked out well. It was open cornered.....by that I mean even the tight stuff had room to freelance your line and cones were close to the minimum...more than I wanted, but..... Top speed was around 65mph.

The same care should have been taken with this most recent event. Your "whining" (and others I suspect) got you a more open course the next day. It looked decent from the vids I saw, but the results were very similar. I've run a lot worse courses than those presented on either day. Adaptation is an imperative at autocross.....always has been and will be so tomorrow. Get your head around that and your AX life will be better. biggrin.gif
DanT
I think griping about the course is a integral portion of the total AX experience.

At this point I am just glad that we have some venues left for our use here in Norcal.
We just need to do the best we can with what we have.

Part of the problem at Alameda is the requirement that we keep speeds at or below 55mph...
also up until recently we needed to stay between the white lines that delineated the runway proper..
brilliantrot
I understand dealing with the city can be a major problem but the way that SoCal has seemed to overcome it is pay lots of money and have more waiver forms. Maybe it isn't an option for GGR but it might be worth taking some polls to see if there is any interest in raising prices to $65 an event (what we pay down here), and getting car counts up to ~110 if that would allow for less restrictions. Maybe faster bigger courses aren't what you guys want or that the added price isn't worth it to the majority or the city can't be enticed with more $ per day but it could be worth looking into. OCR has a blemish free safety record for and SDRs is only roughly one damaged car a year or less and they run full on DEs in the parking lot and have a lot to run into. So it is possible to run fast courses safely. Alameda is large enough to run some really fun, fast, big courses, especially with a couple days spend with some weed killer and a leaf blower (or better yet a street sweeper like El Toro has had on occasion, yes we are spoiled).

smilie_pokal.gif to all the winners ....Toll ya Eric was gonna put the smack down on ya boys lol-2.gif poke.gif even in his ancient 914 rolleyes.gif ..he just has so much car control and been in the same car for so many years ...you Cali guys very seldom get to run in the rain if at all ,wet pavement really help you learn car control and 1/3 of our events seem to be in the rain so when its dry were flat out...Anywho ya`ll had a good time and thats what really counts ..

PIECE OUT aktion035.gif

Overall great event. Sorry I missed second day but between mechanical and not feeling well I jammed.

First day was dominated by 914's and Boxsters. Ken J only ran AM on Saturday and got into mid 30's thats smoking fast for street going Boxster! We had setup issues with my car on tight slow course. Worked on car AM and by PM it was getting closer but we were out driven and our classed by competion! Think I got 31 flat. Think I went even faster on one run but timer crapped out on me. No way I was going to catch small 914's on the Saturday course.

914's ruled! Boxsters were schooled! Well sort of! Think Ken beat Eric.

Dont forget an old tail dragger on Saturday beat everyone except Andrew as well. It wasnt total 914 dominationa ss presented by Chris.

Huh? No rain in Cali? Have you checked weather reports lately. We had rain in Nor Cal until June this year. I have run plenty of wet events!

The 2008 course was awesome. Just wish my 914 hadnt blown LSD that weekend! Probably wouldnt have caught Brit but we would have put in a respectable fight for second place! Much more open than what we faced this weekend but course wasnt all that bad. It just favored precision driving and people who could see through cones to course. I was actually surprised at how fast I got the big ole Phat car around the course this Saturday.

A sub 40 second course? confused24.gif What kind of AX is that? dry.gif

The shortest course I have ever seen the TTOD was 43 seconds and it was done by an SAE car.

Why was it so short?
