Well,
The wife is working all 3 days this weekend, so all my little 914 projects are going to get done. here's what's on the docket:
  • install jwest fuse panel
  • install jwest fog light module
  • install rennshift
  • new shift bushings all around
  • new clutch cable
  • new accel cable
  • replacing all the vaccuum hoses
  • setting timing
A bit ambitious perhaps, but most of these are "while i'm in there" type things. Besides, I figure replacing the clutch and accel cables is best to do in the comfort of my garage....since the next time i have to do it might be on the side of the road!

What do you all have planned for the long weekend? flag.gif

P.S. any boston area teeners are welcome to come by and wrench with me!

so where in the Boston area are you.. I might be able to swing by and drink your beer.. I live in Haverhill/Bradford on the NH state line, and I know a few other 'teeners around who are always looking for an excuse to drive the cars..

BTW, I all ready have the fog light project done on my car, and I love it.. I also put one in another notheastern's car... very cool in operation.

p.s. enjoy the Rennshift treat you have coming

I'm in Needham -- 15 miles due west of boston. PM me if you want to come by and i'll give you the address. I have a 2 bay garage if you want to do any work while you're here.

I know Haverhill, I used to work at a little systems integrator up in Plaistow NH (right over the border).

Ha! If James was selling stock i'd buy it. His stuff is top notch and reasonably priced for the quality.

I am hoping that post-rennshift and bushing replacement I'll be able to find 1st on the 1st try every time...

This weekend is all house stuff and brewing stuff, the 914 will have to wait. I did receive another fuel tank yesterday, now just waiting on the POR-15 kit before beginning the fueling rehab project. Someday it will move from the garage lol-2.gif

Hope to get the whole car in final prime and blocked out, ready for color.

Rich -
What's your wife's work number & I'll call to remind her that she surely forgot to give you the honey-do list! biggrin.gif

No reason I should have one & you not! dry.gif
Unfortunately mine only has "call" on Monday - so it's "her" New Gazebo & furniture, BBQ cook, clearance & install new Westy Alloy Wheels' center caps, Kleen Wheels Westy & BMW & wash both, repair BMW seat/back cover/etc., my Office shelves, new back door fitted & hung, etc. ..... then maybe some 914 time! dry.gif

Make sure to check your clutch cable tube is securely welded at the firewall, mid-rear tunnel & forward of shifter while you're doing those cables Rich. It's a common 914 problem for them to break loose & slop around while you're trying to clutch! driving.gif

Something to entertain the kiddies while you (try to) work on your 914 - stirthepot.gif hissyfit.gif poke.gif grouphug.gif
.... those with kids know how this goes, if you don't have any yet! dry.gif

Doing an engine drop on my Westy. Should be interesting since I've never solo'd on one before.

Memorial Day I will probably go to the Tahoma National Cemetery to pay my respects to my fallen comrades. RIP

Let me know how you like the Rennshift. I really, really want one for my 914. Everytime I almost have the money for one something else comes up.

I'll be helping with the PCA Club Race at Eagles Canyon Raceway Saturday and Sunday. I'll be working grid.

Finished adjusting valves on the rebuilt top end last night.

Installed fan shroud. Started to install alternator and engine stand tipped over. FAAA!!!!

Getting a buddy over today to help get it back on the stand. Hopefully no damage, and then putting on the tin, trans, and sticking her back in the car!!!

An update based on 4h in my garage last night:
  • install jwest fuse panel done.
  • install jwest fog light module
  • install rennshift done.
  • new shift bushings all around
  • new clutch cable
  • new accel cable
  • replacing all the vaccuum hoses done, although I found some discrepancies between DD's and George's hose connection diagrams...will be the subject of another post
  • setting timing

i also swapped out my vinyl-peeling center console sides for ones in much better shape.

Hopefully I can get everything else done today!

Tom, I've got the honeydo list too, believe me. Mow the lawn, fix the guest room toilet, paint the attic stairs...it's all about multitasking!!

While installing the rennshift, i discovered mine has broken free forward of the shfter sad.gif

I patched it up with some JBWeld until I can get it to Racer Chris' place for a proper repair job dry.gif

None of these yet! I'm trying to get this 914 as sorted as possible for when they do arrive...so I can maximize the time I spend driving.gif
SLITS
Buy a cable clamp (U bracket) and bolt the front of the tube down ... permanent!

Slits...I thought of that exact same thing, but had a hard time getting a drill in there to attach the cable clamp.

After the JB cured, I got pretty aggressive trying to move it around. I think the JB is permanent! (only time will tell...)

easy enough to get back in there with a cable clamp later if I have to.

the good news is the clutch tube weld @ the FW is still very strong.

End of the weekend update:
  • install jwest fuse panel done.
  • install jwest fog light module
  • install rennshift done.
  • new shift bushings all around done, except for the ones at the front of the shift rod...these i will get pressed on at a machine shop.
  • new clutch cable done.
  • new accel cable
  • replacing all the vaccum hoses done, although I found some discrepancies between DD's and George's hose connection diagrams...will be the subject of another post
  • setting timing

My jb-welded clutch tube came loose during my rennshift shakedown cruise, which prevented me from getting into 4th and 5th. I re-did the "weld", this time cleaning all surfaces thoroughly with carb cleaner and roughing with sandpaper. hopefully this will hold until I can get it done properly or get a cable clamp in there.

I also discovered my right rear caliper is leaking sad.gif

Time to give Mr. Shea a call...
Root_Werks
My 914-4 2.0 carb'd has been running kinda like poo for the last month or so. So my earlier post in this thread was to eliminate most simple things. I did get done:

Valve adjust, proper 6 intake, 8 exhaust

No new points, but set to perfect dwell of 47-48

New plugs and wires (Beru's and Bosch plugs)

Fired it back up, still runs about the same, better, but not like it did when I bought it.

Start turning the little idle air screws (40IDF's), #4 and #1 don't respond.

headbang.gif

I tried to kinda blow them out, but no diff.

Gotta order up some tune-up kits for both sides now.

It's really jerky, sometimes will run perfect, others will really sputter, pop, fart. Just sitting idling, pop! Pop! and "tweep" out the intakes.

Converting back to FI is looking more tempting. idea.gif

JB Weld attempt #2 is holding. I've got 4th and 5th back! smilie_pokal.gif

for anyone considering a rennshift, I have two statements:
1. It's worth it. really. if...
2. your tranny is in good shape.

My tranny is in good shape, I have some slop at my rearmost bushing, but that's the only flaw i can detect, no grinding or clunks anywhere else.

My clutch tube, which was broken free at the front, worked fine with the stock shifter, but made the rennshift inoperable (probably because it has more horiz displacement in the tunnel).

a rennshift on top of a well functioning transmission is a beautiful thing.
