I have to vent for a moment. I was looking at an add In Samba about a week or so ago placed by a guy in the name of SHANE RED for some fuel injection. Called that guy about 3 times and talked to him to make sure he wouldnt sell the parts to someone else. He assured me he wouldnt, he said the parts were at his friends house and when he got his friend to bring them over he would call me back. one week later I didnt get a call back. Called him today and he sold it to someone who just came by. Dude thats so weak. People have no loyalty anymore these days. Ive been in similar situations and lost money because i promised parts or merchandise to someone else. Sickening what the worlds come to. Anyone else feel my pain??

I sold some very specific parts a few weeks ago, and in doing so could have made about $500 more selling to someone else....
I didn't because I committed to one particular person and followed thru...

nothing surprises me any more.

If I tell someone I will sell to them for a price, I keep my word. However, most times these days I will not hold it for anyone. Too many times I have been burned by the whole "I want it, consider it sold, I'll be over tomorrow morning to pay!" and never hear back.

Now I simply say "they are still available and the first person to bring cash gets it"

At least you aren't out anything! Don't know how many times I have driven more than an hour just to have the 914 or parts sold. Despite being assured they would hold them for me . Such is life & I understand to a point. I too have been burned multiple times by buyers saying I will be there with the cash in 2 hours or the next day. Sounds good enough on the phone . To bad people don't do what they say. At the very least they could call back to say I can't make it. Nothing like planning your day around other peoples schedule. Only to have them no show

I drove two and a half hours to get a car, and it was sold out from under me in the time it took for me to hook up my trailer, fuel up and get there. I was out the time, trouble, and fuel expense.

I can relate, but legally you have no damages, so consider the seller a jerk and move on.

Try offering a deposit in the future so he knows you're serious.

Grandma said it best: "a bird in the hand is worth two in the bush"

It is not uncommon for buyers NOT to show up for appointments.

Cash talks.

A deposit is a good idea. Paypal can get a deposit in the seller's hand right away.

It has happened to me on this board as well but for the most part the people on this board are better to work with you especially if they know you.

I always use paypal deposit to show my intentions. I have done it 2 times on $500 vehicles.. 150 in paypal till I can get up there in the next couple days to get the vehicle, then the rest in cash. Make clear as to WHEN your going to pick up the items and set a date as to if you dont pick them up by XX/XX/XX then the money's his and he is free to sell the stuff.


Clear contracts make for happy people.

Stuff like this happens all the time with used parts, dealing with people, not businesses.

Gotta say though, poor Matt had his share this week:

Matt agreed to purchase my windshield I had up in the classifieds. I PM'd him my addy, set up a Wed pick-up date.

I get a call Wed from Mark (Not Matt) asking if it was okay to pick the windshield. Sure, come on up!

History - I hadn't ever met either one in person before. Mark was a guy who said he would buy the windshield about a month ago. We set up meeting dates etc and it just never panned out. So eventually I relisted the item.

Back to last Wed:

This explains why Mark already had my address. He picked up the part, everyone happy right?

Get a PM from Matt over the weekend asking about a new pick-up date.

DOH! - I had no idea what had happened until I got Matt's PM!

Selling can be tough. Most anything I sell isn't to make money, but help out another fellow teener and hopefully bust even on the part.

I feel for you Matt. It was not a good week for parts chasing.

Hang in there though. I've lost many parts the same way. Sometimes people loose track of who bought what. It happens.

Many times I've had to remind myself:

If I cannot go down RIGHT NOW with money in hand to pick it up, don't even ask about it.

That alone has stopped me from inquiring about parts for sale for which I've been grateful. Not becuase I didn't have the money, but something came up and I either didn't need the part, money wasn't in my hands, or I just didn't have time to go and pick up the part.

It's a tough market just buying or selling to begin with. I always try to excersize patience with fellow teener dealings.

I think best example I ever saw was my 90 year old grandma selling a Dodge Dart for $1300 and when she got somone who was very excited about the car she raised the price $500 and the person still bought the car for $1800!

As many have said you have no contract until money is recieved or you both sign an agreement.

Honor and integrity is better left for 1950's era Westerns not parts promised by somone you hardly know.

If this was the biggest complaint in the world I would say we live in a pretty wonderful place.
