For those of you in California, I just went over to NV to look at a '73 914. I'm wondering if I were to purchase it, would I have any problem registering it here in California. I know '75 and older are smog exempt but I wasn't sure if I'd have any other problems. I already looked at what was on the DMV website and I can't make sense of it. Thanks in advance.

75 and earlier are not required to test. You are of course required to maintain the smog equipment and safety equipment by the Federal government.

Short answer, nope. You'll have no trouble. You might need a lights inspection if it hasn't been in the state before.

Good to know.....Thanks.

Mark got me thinking about that Brake and Light Inspection Certificate so I went to DMV.COM and checked. You will need to physically bring the car to DMV for a VIN inspection but no brake and light inspection is required. Gross weight and smog are the only required inspections and only if they apply. Now, if the car has a salvaged title from any other state, it must have a DMV inspection, a CHP inspection, and the Brake and Light Inspection. Total pain...

No issue registering it here. Mine is a 73 as well.

Now IF I COULD ONLY GET IT RUNNING LIKE IT WAS LAST YEAR BEFORE I TOUCHED IT.

Good driving to you!

Any 49 State vehicle must have a minimum of 6500 miles on the odometer before it can enter California. Smog only required on 76 and newer cars. Weight usually only required on trucks. Physical VIN inspection required at the local DMV office. Cal DMV will charge you sales tax on the purchase price.

.... ummmm, you guys are forgetting the key question in these situations -

Is it currently registered out of state?

If yes & 75 or older MY, then not much of a problem, other than the usual DMV BS!

I not, then it may not be an impossibility, but will definitely be more of a hassle cuz you'll need to go through a lot more paperwork, check if stolen, etc.

There's actually a couple of topics under O&H & maybe in Garage too on (re-)registering in CA, so search for those because they have direct links to some of the more obscure forms on their website.

Here are a few I had bookmarked fyi -

Oh, might be a problem. The Odo only has 600 miles on it because it was replaced during the Resto. Dang, I like this car, but I don't want to buy it in NV and get it home and not be able to Register it.

You can write a "statement of facts" describing the odo change. Should not be a problem for a car so old. You could also state the odo has turned over.

Good Idea. I think I'm going to make a call, see if owner has Title, also if Vin's match. I didn't even think to look at Vin's, wish I would have. Didn't know DMV checked that...
