Would there be anything on the VW model side as far as seat belt retractors that would work on a 914 as well?
Gigamight
I don't know anything about the VW models, but I recall someone saying that they used retractors from a Subaru Forester (?) that fit perfect IIRC.

I have been planning on giving that a try myself next time I go to the yard.

Do a search. Someone recommended this aftermarket seat belt company that fits perfectly for $98.00 a side. I paid big bucks for NOS 914 seat belts and they only lasted 5 years. It might of been on the club site. I will post the link when I get back online instead of my iPhone.

I went with these too, after spending on the NOS for my last 914 with little improvement..

However, the 110" are too long.. so they don't retract very well either. I still have to do the manual feed thing to have them be tidy. If someone else orders these, maybe ask for a custom length and take off 10 or 15 inches.

Also, they don't fit directly into the stock location - I had to space them out about 1/4" - the reel section is either too high or too low.. something like that.

I didn't notice any installation issues except the missing nipple on top. Mine also do not retract the last foot or so. Otherwise I am happy with them. The previous NOS kept sticking on the drivers side when I tried to put them on. Also both sides would not retract all the way either.

I didn't have any problems mounting them except for the missing top nipple. I did notice that they do not retract the last foot or so. I had the same problem with the NOS seat belts. The drivers side kept sticking and pissing me off. Also both sides of the NOS seat belts would not retract all they way without some help. So overall I am very happy with these aftermarket belts. Its also nice that they are modern and have the release buttons on top. Not for the concourse weenies, but my car is anything but stock.

NOS belts need to be tightened. They have been on the shelf for 20 years and lost their tension. They offer little improvement in retraction. That is how I learned to tighten them. I bought new ones that sucked.....Now they work great.

Offer still open for $20.00. You pay shipping. I can usually turn them around in a day.

If I still had that 914 with the new NOS belts, I'd totally do this.. unfortunately my "new" 914, the belts were totally shot (swollen and fuzzy) - so no good there!

I found this rebuild of 914 belts/retractors online, but haven't tried them yet.
