Couldn't decide which of my previous "front end" threads to post this to, so I started a new one. It started out six weeks ago when I decided to replace one tie rod end. Turned out I needed ball joints to, and found out I had two different types of 911 struts, and the PO (eBay huckster Al "Fastal1973" Conrad of Madison , CT) had jimmied in the wrong ball joints, and generally did a hack job.
I really need to thank Cap'n Krusty for persuading me in his gentle way to "do the right thing" and replace the old style strut so I'd have two matching struts of good quality (the old style one had been effed with too much).
My struts even have the same model numbers:
911 341 079 04
911 341 080 04
New ball joints...new tie rod ends...all is good here in Bawlmer.
Bleed the brakes tomorrow , and we're back on the road in great shape.
Newbies...take encouragement. Since joining this group 11 months ago, I've rebuilt Weber IDF40s and set them up to perfection, traced and repaired all of the electrical glitches, and now rebuilt my front suspension. Ive learned more in those 11 months than any two years of school taught me, and had a blast (most of the time).

I *almost* agree with that statement. I think it's more like:
914's are not cars, they are an addiction. And there is no cure.

Absolutely. Every "newbie" needs to realize it's not even close to rocket science. Just gotta be willing to learn, ask and try.
