The car was obviously overloaded, "...the driver and his
two companions". He would have made it with only one other person in the 914.

Wow. Without the pictures we'd all have called it "urban legend". Truth IS stranger than fiction. Wish someone had caught it on tape. These 3 get a gold medal in the moron olympics.

But they DID make it! Article says they soared 10-15 feet across the gap and went another ~70 before touchdown on the other side. You're looking at what happened when it smashed into the bottom of the ramp coming down the far side.

The caption on the second picture says it's in Clearwater. That's the Tampa Bay area, where I grew up. Now you know why I don't want to go back there.

If ya go out drinking beer and driving a itty bitty sports car... you might be a redneck.
if you try to out run the cops in that itty bitty sports car... you might be a redneck.
if you try to jump a draw bridge like the Duke's of Hazzard in that itty bitty sports car... you might be a redneck.
if you try to jump a draw bridge like the Duke's of Hazzard with 2 buddies in speedo's in that itty bitty sports car... you might be a redneck.

Did anyone notice if the webpage said when that happened?
The rednecks are mostly inland. Out towards the beaches it's white trash (even tho a lot of that white trash is easy on the eyes).
I probably won't be back until Christmas unless my Grandmother's health starts going downhill again.

Last time I was in Clearwater, someone shot down a police helicopter. Nope, no rednecks around there.

Apr 8 2003, 07:27 PM
Ummmm... it depends on how big the bag is???
Ya, it's over the price of gold by now! Can you imagin how hard it would be to have the cops pounding on your door and have to flush it at that price??? It was hard to do that when it was only $10

I'm in Tampa, across the bay from Clearwater. I've been over that bridge a million times, but never thought about jumping it. If you get caught at that bridge on a Saturday you might as well turn off your engine and take a nap. Guess they didn't want to wait.
Clearwater is also known a "God's Waiting Room". You have to be old as dirt to live there.

After looking at that (and having driven a 914 or two), I wonder to myself how that car had enough power to get sufficient momentum to drive UP the ramp and OVER the 15' gap with THREE people in it.
..must be a 2.0 ;-)

As idiotic as it is, man what a story.
The facts:
1) three kids in a Porsche
2) outran a pursuing police vehicle
3) jumped across an open drawbridge and made it
4) survived to tell the story
Now don't get me wrong. These guys are idiots plain and simple, but how many people have a story this good with pictures to prove it?
I'm glad it was a 914. File it away under "Cool things done in a 914." A Gremlin? Come on... The Gremlin guys would be lucky if "Coolest thing done in a Gremlin" was "made out with the girl with the lazy eye".
What was that early '80's spy movie where they jumped a silver 911 turbo over the Berlin wall (leaving it in much the same condition as the draw-bridge 914)? I saw it around 1982 or so. I was 11 or 12, visiting an aunt and uncle and pretended to be asleep then got up and watched it on HBO in the middle of the night. I had found a way to see it because I had seen in the trailers that there was a Porsche chase scene in the movie.
