Full Version: Setup advice for tarmac rally

Seeing as a lot of you have more experience of racing on the black stuff than me I thought I'd call on you guys for some expert advice.

I'm used to racing on this:

but in August I'm going to be doing a tarmac rally, specifically the Ulster Rally. See below Youtube clips to give you an idea of what the surface/terrain is like:

completely different to what I'm used to. I know what setup works best for the loose but haven't got time to test a load of different setups so need to fast-track by leaning on you guys to give me a setup which should get me close to start with.

Ignoring the height, what toe in front and rear, camber and caster would you reccomend for this type of surface/terrain.

I've got 180 springs on the back, standard front bars, weltmeister anti-roll bar on the front. Running 180/70 dunlops all round.

What I use for tarmac events: 1 mm toe in each side on the front with 2 deg negative. 2 mm toe in each side on the rear with 1-1.5 deg neg. I use just enough caster to give me directional stability on the quick bits. Dont know what it is in degrees, but about mid way in the slots.

This is with 205/50/15 Dunlop D03G full soft set at 26 front and rear. Yellow Konis on soft. 19 mm torsion bars and 145 lb Eibach springs. 20 mm sway bar front and 16 mm rear. I have found that you are better off keeping it relatively soft and controllable than the rock hard approach, particularly if its wet.

Thanks Howard. Great info, that's exactly what I'm looking for, and from someone who's been there and done it. The roads look a little more open and smooth to what I'm going to be encountering. Great in car footage.

What do you mean by "1 mm toe in each side on the front with 2 deg negative." I don't wuite get what you mean by 1mm toe in, do you mean 1 deg toe in each side, which equals 2 deg total?

The toe in is 1 mm each side as in each wheel points inwards by 1 mm. The camber is 2 deg negative, although unless you have bent the leg or widened the wishbone you may not get that much, in which case run the most you can. You can probably lower the car a fair bit as well which will help. I corner weight mine also, but that is a bit anal.

We do have tighter stages eg Basket Range, big trees, big cliffs, no fuching guard rails and a bit wet. No need for any chicanes to keep the speed down on this one:
