Hey guys-

Well, one of the things I wanted to do on my project is paint the car myself. As I am finalizing the engine issue, I am starting to think about paint. I am not going to do a professional job by any means, but I need to start somewhere and I am looking for a 20/20 paint job (looks good 20 feet away or at 20 mph).

I remember seeing a very detailed thread of a member painting their 914 (adriatic blue, or maybe olympic blue) but I searched and could not find anything. I am wondering if anyone knows any good tutorials or has any basic tips for painting. I do have an air compressor and will be getting a paint gun from my uncle.

I would like to know the basics...

- grit of sandpaper?
- how many coats of each layer (primer, paint, clear)
- dry sand in between coats or wet sand?
- types of tools for sanding
- oscillating electric sanders?
- long block sanding?

Any tips or threads you can point me to would be great. Thanks in advance.

There is no reason you should not be able to do a professional job. Just remember to take your time, and be patient. By the time your done laying down multi layers of primer, you pretty much have the paint skills to shoot basecoat/clearcoat. If you do that well, your finish is going to be all in the cutting and buffing of the clear coat. As long as you do not cut through the clear, you can keep laying it on, and re-cutting buffing.

Oh, and when your doing the priming/blocking, two words of advice......."guide coat"

You can learn a lot reading the forums at this site :
