Full Version: Still running poorly

It warmed up a little yesterday, so I worked on the /6 when I got home from work.

Replaced two fuel filters, and remounted the pump, that seems to have come a bit loose. I had hoped that replacing fuel filters would clear up the running issue. No luck.

The car runs poorly - under load/acceleration it hiccups, spits, backfires. Once I get it to a cruising speed, it's not too horrible.

The plug wires ore OEM, and only have a couple thousand miles on them. I checked the cap and rotor, and they looked okay. I'll try the new coil from Summit tonight. Any thoughts or suggestions?

Refresh my memory...

What did you change that made it run like crap? Didn't you put a pertronix in it or something? I can't remember now.
Lawrence
I swapped the stock CD box with a Permatune. The car had been setting for a little bit before the swap.

Swapping back didn't seem to help. I really don't know if the running problem was coincidence or not.

The car has points in a Bosch dizzy. Is it possible that the increased output of the Permatune damaged the points enough that the car would run like crap at higher RPMs and under load?

Dunno. Try to get to known good state. Id put the original CD box back in with new cap/rotor/points and then try it. Could be the rotor resistor fried (a little?).
Lawrence
The original CD box is back in - the car spit and backfired it's way to work today.

I'm going to go tinker with it at lunch at bit. It's beautiful out.

Same here. 70's though the weekend. Great weather for pulling motor/tranny and disecting a parts car.
Lawrence
I'm nervous bolting this new coil in over lunch. If I blow something, towing the car home will be a real bitch.
Gint
Wait till you get home. It will still be nice and it stays light out until 20:00 now!
Lawrence
Yeah, I'm just finally adjusting to the time change. That extra hour in the morning kicks my behind sometimes.

I've got to get this car running right, though.

Reach your hand in (while engine off rolleyes.gif ) and make
sure the dist advance is totally working and smooth.

Points. All it takes is small buildup on them and it will run like crap. Its the only thing you have checked/changed.

Replace them... or make Brad get on the stick for a electronic solution for the stock dizzy.

No, I haven't done anything with the points yet. I think I even have a set in the toolbox.

Mostly because I hate the position of the distributor. Changing the points means setting dwell and timing. A huge pain in the ass, especially trying to get the hot engine to 6000 rpm (right up against redline) to lock down the timing.

If there was an easier way, I'd have jumped on it already.

My car has a Bosch dizzy. I shit-canned the Marelli. Still got a rotor and cap for it somewhere, though.

Long distance tuning is such a bitch that I almost hate to get involved......oh well.

There are so many things that can be screwed up, but it *sounds* like a side to side carb balance or an idle circuit problem rather than ignition.

On the ignition front, from your discription, your woes can be caused by improper timing or erratic dizzy advance.

I shitcanned points long ago for Pertronics and have never regretted it. They either work or they don't....and mine always have worked.

There are several carb related issues that will cause these running problems....I've experienced most all of them in my Weber learing curve.

I would go back to square one and make absolutely sure the carbs were right. This would include checking the idle jets for FOD.....crud often gets to em' when one has been fooling with the fuel system.
