Does anyone have a scan of the last issue of the market update from excellence, I'd like to provide it to the evaluator. Or, at least can anyone give me the values for a 74 2.0?

You are looking for the November 2009 issue. No, I do not have a scan or the time to find and scan it. Sorry.

You aren't really telling us the back story but you don't have to settle until you are ready and on terms you are satisfied with. Just say no until you have the data you need.

Tho story is quite simple actually, I bought a new teener a month ago.

I'm with the Silver Wheel plan, a classic car insurance and I have to provide the insurance co an appraisal by a pro to be insured.

Since 914s are scarce here and most are rust buckets, I don't think local ads are a good referrence for the appraisal guy.

I wanted to provide him with the excellence market values to try and push his evaluation a little higher.

I did hear the stories with insurace companies and how they try to lowball you, so I'm trying to start on a better foot.

Given that 914's trade internationally at this point, the appraisal should reflect what its worth at least in the USA+Canada, assuming it's in collectible condition & not a beat-up DD.

If this appraiser you have isn't familiar with collectible old Porsches & 914s, then IMHO - get another or challenge his/her appraisal if they work for the insurance company. Also shop several insurance companies for collectible cars against each other, so they play more honestly & you get the best coverage/price/terms available.

Both these numbers are insane.

You can buy excellent 914s for under $5000

Even 3.2 six conversions with steel flares aren't worth much more than $16000

If these cars are really worth $12000 for a four and $25000 for a six conversion, then someone bring thier cash and get my three cars right now.

I agree but I don't think it applies to the east coast...

And it's for insurance puposes, in the end a car is worth what someone else is willing to pay for it.

BTW the car was appraised to $14K and it's not a perfect car, I clean daily driver.

He did compare NADA and other pricing lists, the Excellence market update did help IMO to be in the upper bracket.

I agree, they are insane and don't reflect the actual market.

$5K barely buys drivers around here, and those often with significant issues.

'Excellent' starts above $12K and goes up to double that for a 914/4.

This is like one guy saying the sheep has long hair. There is no perfect car in my opinion. I guess I might one day come across a excellent car but I haven't so far. I have come across lots of cars I would like to own though. To me a 914 that is worth 14k won't get driven much. I'd need three days to go over a 914 appraised at 14k.

I guess it depends on the market? Aren't 914s in more demand in CA? Here in Texas, 5k will buy something pretty nice with maybe a couple minor issues...7k-9k is excellent from what I've seen.

I have to agree with Jeff Bowlsby. I overpaid 2k @ 13k for mine, and have another 3k into it, and it appraised for 15,500, so I am not unhappy. 1973-4 914 2.0L originals are getting DAMN hard to find. Hell, there are only a thousand REAL matching numbers 914-6's left in the world, maybe? Most have been altered.

I have not seen a real 2.0L 6 in decades that is still stock, but I missed the last SoCal concours.

I drove Orangina 1500 miles in 3 days getting it home last May. Yes, it still needs some love, but so what? I am getting to it all. I don't even have a paint bubble anywhere. Got some nicks though, and those are going away in September.

I had to go to a specialist to have Mercury cover it. He went over it like crazy. Took 2 hours yesterday and he came to me in SoCal.

He was surprised not to find anything other than the already cut out jackpoints, which I have scheduled to fix in August. New welding is next week.

Otherwise no rust left, 107,000 original miles, and a pretty damn clean driver.

Sure, Jeff's Creamsicle is maybe a lot nicer, but mine has 95% original paint.

I see nothing like it on the East Coast (just that one in NY State yesterday on Samba in silver), and the best 73 2.0L I have seen in years sold in San Diego for 15,500 last month. Now that was a smoking hot car in Red (Bahia, I think).

I am seriously considering a 6, but I may just buy a racecar. I expect to spend at least 25K, and it may be 35K.

Just my dumbass opinion.
