Hey everyone, I had just bought my first 914. It's a 1970 1.7L. I recently got interested into 914's and so I did what was necessary! I need to drop the engine, clean it, and install the fuel injection. There's not too much rust, just some in the "normal" 914 spots. I got mine for $500 and was wondering if it was a good buy? I got some pictures of it.

How is the rust on the battery tray and on the engine shelves? Looks like a solid 914 and a decent buy! Post more pics of the trunks and engine bay too! We want to see it!

The previous owner had removed the battery tray because he wanted to relocate the battery farther back in the rear, where it would have less potential for rust. He never got around to relocating it because he said he has never been busier in his life so he was selling it and I took up on the deal. He also wanted to convert the fuel injection to dual weber carbs but didnt finish that either. I want to install the fuel injection instead of carbs. I am debating whether or not to reupholster the seats to leather or fabric. I'm also looking for some vinyl "sails" or whatever they are called, they look like this Click to view attachment Click to view attachment I will post more pictures later because it's dark outside and you cant see anything!

Welcome to the world. !!! more pics from the longs.
Looks like a nice find.
I would suggest to restore the car to the factory specs. You can find factory-like upholstery kits for your seats at Autoatlanta. Looks your car got the corduroy option.

For $500 you got a deal - the wheels are worth that.
Don't let the car sit on Jackstands too long, these cars are meant for driving
Enjoy, T.C.

Looks like a very good deal. IMO the best thing you can do is get her drivable ASAP . That way you can start enjoying her and take the restoration project over time as money and time permit. Porsches are the easiest car in the world to fall in love with and the easiest car to fall out of love with. Get her running as quick as you can

Put the batery back where it belongs and use an Optima or any Jell cell and you won't have to worry about the acid gasing out and getting between the trunk lid skin and internal bracing and rusting out the trunk lid not to mention the trunk gaskets usually leak and the water mixed with the seeping acid from the battery will speed up the rust in the trunk floor.
Looks like a nice car to start with.

I plan on using the original 1.7l engine and the orignal trans. I'm gonna have to replace the brakes and tires. Targa top is in great shape
Anybody got some non-flared rockers?

I do, but the shipping would hurt as they are long. If someone in your area can't help (and I'm sure they can), let me know

Hey! Welcome to the world! Greetings from way over here in Japan.
Check out this shop for your interior needs and those sail panels http://www.914ap.com/ I have ordered some items from them and prices are reasonable.

Here is where the battery tray used to be. The same corner you are seeing in the pic has rusted through and made 2 small holes, any suggestions on repairing that? (fiberglass fix kit or something?) I have no skill in welding.

I'm gonna get working on it as soon as I get the jeep out and the 914 in! I have already done a few things on the car.
