I have a '72 with a 1.7L that has 96mm pistons in it. I get this engine rattle at 2600rpm and it goes away around 3200rpm. I have gotten some info, among other types of info, that it might be the valves. I have them at .006 currently and wondering if I should have the exhaust valves at .008? Thanks for your help.

Hmmm, well, if the heads are rebuilt with the sodium filled 2.0l exhaust valves, You can go to 0.008, but otherwise look elsewhere for the rattle in my opinion.
What pistons are in it? Some pistons (96mm) are now built without a piston pin offset, which increases piston slap, which might be what you are hearing.
I hope that helps.

Thanks! I re-did the valves and the noise is no longer... apparently 2 and 4 were a lil tight
