So my friend yanked the 4 cylinder and put in a 6 cylinder a VR6 (starting to sound familiar?). Added a BIG turbo and has one bad ass Bug. He calls it "The Roach"..

Now, how much work would it take to stuff a 3.6 in the back of one of those...

That car looks great! I seem to recall cooling can be an issue with the new beetle, such that the same turbo 2.0 from the factory makes less HP in that body than in the golf. They pulled back on the tune as keeping it all cool was a problem. Hopefully he has this figured out, as it would be a shame to melt all that hard work.

LOVE the idea of a middie version...

He keeps several different tunes in his laptop and downloads as needed. He did mention that cooling seems to be an slight issue - forget about trying to run the A/C as he can't get enough air flow and the engine compartment is like a heat sink....

The New Beetle came with the 1.8T from the factory which was detuned to 150hp versus the 180hp in the GTi. Cooling was not the issue. VW detuned it to encourage GTi sales.

The 2.0T was never offered in the New Beetle.

The VR6 is a direct drop-in and is nothing new.

The New Beetle RSi with the VR6 and AWD was the hot Rally setup in Europe about 10 years ago.

We have no inspections in Kansas - when you go to register a car - all they do is a VIN check. If they find it in 2 places you are good.

No emissions check in Kansas but then no twisty roads in Kansas....

At least you can see the sparkplugs on the vr6. Try that on a suby in the stock car configuration.
