piratenanner.gif Is this the so called 5k engine , ????? biggrin.gif or what would this build cost -minus labor

this engine has been on evil bay . at least once , auction ran out with no bids .

buyer is asking , 5500. buy it now . it's in riverside . local pickup for me / i also have a truck

Is this a good deal or will future 2.0 2056c/ far exceed this build.

I know as far as cyclinder heads . jake has actual new heads . but other then that what advantage's would a new build have to this .

And price wize , is this as good as it get's or

would using my current 1/7 engine to build a 2056 be less or as expensive or more .

if also built to 2056c with my stock d'jet . also consider ; i'm not a engine builder agree.gif

I bought a 5k car about a year ago , that runs like a champ . looks good and other then new batt . have never had an issue with .

but bolt this in and i'm sure i'd be loving it even more ? along with a new exh. sheeplove.gif

O and oil accumlators . ? are they used on high performance production cars

No link? Too lazy to search ebay for something I don't want.

This message seems like jibrish. Can you please ask a specific question and provide a link to the engine in question?

For a long term 914 motor and owner, you or someone who is known well (ie Jake or McMark) should know about every part of your rebuilt motor...

It has a pretty paint job! Really can't tell you anything else based on that auction. If I were you, PM McMark and get a run down from him. I think he has engines for sale at originalcustoms.com

If you want to go fast, I'll sell you my V8 setup for less $$$. McMark is a smart guy and does good work. I would trust him to build me an engine.

The engine does look pretty but if I were spending that kind of money, I would get a motor from McMark or Jake and know it was done right.

Someone here bought a 2.4 T4 that guy build and sold on ebay. I don't remember who it was. Perhaps he will chime in on how the engine he got has turned out.

I know him.

Michael Schantz. Maybe 23 years old.

His dad used to work on 914's. Michael is in Cal Poly Pomona getting an MS in mechanical engineering. Really nice kid.

His work looks nice, but most everyone here is spoiled on Jake or McMark's work, so Michael is fighting an uphill battle on 914World.

I have seen 2 of his engines, one was a bus engine adapted for a 914 1.8

Not sure about what parts he uses either. I have bought used parts from him, including 2 bumper tops.

He certainly is good at what he does, but I know no one that bought an engine from him. His brother is working at liquidating a pile of parts they have.

Michael will be restoring a white 914 2.0L when he gets out of grad school.

Again, a really decent guy, but don't know his engine work. He knows about everyone teener-linked in the Riverside area quite well.

I would not say its all over. The guy who bought the engine may have had no problems with it. I don't know. I was just saying that someone that posts here has bought one of this guy's motors. Maybe its a killer fast engine.

I dont know how guys can build something GOOD that cheaply. it takes me days just to measure everythng. it takes even longer to clean EVERYTHING. then add up just the machining costs.
balance pistons rods flywheel p-plate, align bore, decking, tap oil plugs
measure heads, cc, deck height, pistons, cylinder bores, ring gaps, bearign clearances, valve geometry
HEADS, rebuild, weld, machining, cores, valves, seats, guides, springs

"The $5k Engine" is a long block. there is a therad about it and it is a good deal for known parts combo. a tru pro has measured and made sure everthing works together. read carefully. he explains alot

Grad student . . . his time is cheap, I know this. ME student, likely knows how to use micrometers, calipers, depth gauges, etc. Remember I said likely. Getting an MS degree so he is probably pretty thorough. Probably. Engine development is tough, engine building is not if you are thorough and meticulous. Making a couple hundred for pizza and beer as a grad student while doing something that is therapeutic after studying all day is a good deal, even if he is only getting paid a few dollars an hour. ME students should enjoy stuff like building engines, sadly very few do.

Don't assume what he is doing is crappy simply because he doesn't seem to be charging much for labor.

Just my two cents.

last thread asking about him had a few references chime in positively. any builder should be able to provide references upon request.
ripper911
So, if I rebuild my old engine myself and it runs... Who wants to pay an embalmer to build an engine for them? whack_3.gif

I won't undercut myself on the hourly rate!
