Full Version: SHOW ME YOUR RACK!

Well this thread may already be in existence, but I have yet to find it if it is.
First off, I adore my car. It's old, not very shiny, and needs some things fixed. In that respect, it's just like me. =) I also live to be outdoors and go biking or kayaking every chance I get. For that reason, all my vehicles have rack systems. It's just par for the course around my place. Well, I took the rack off my saturn as I'm about to try and sell it, when it hit me..."I wonder if I can get this to work on the porsche"? Turns out, I could...and did.
I'm very happy with it. I used an extra top I had, cleaned it up, and so if I don't plan on going biking or boating, I will just leave the rack top in the garage, and the other top stays in the rear trunk for if I need it.

So, I'd love to see what others have come up with to extend their cars uses to include extra carry space, be it for luggage, bodies, what have you.
Here are a couple pics of my setup, that currently will hold at least two kayaks and my bike. I am toying with the idea of a rear trunk luggage rack someday. But who knows.

They also made various ski & bike racks back in the day for our 914's (I had both), many of which are listed at Jeff Bowlsby's 914 Accessories page (including mine) -

JT, I actually got new tires about two weeks ago. Fought tire in Bryant gave me a good price on them, and the highway shimmy's are a thing of the past now. It handles so much better than it did. Smooth as can be. I need to stop by and show em to you.

I used old Yakima parts i have had forever, and the engine lid has been reinforced under the fork mounts....will need to control the pedals to keep them from hitting the trunk lid, and may have to add a scratch preventor plate under the fork mounts after the car is painted! I think this is a good solution. I can add 2 wheel holders to take the front wheels, or put them in the trunks

Mine used to have a rack:

Fixed that issue though!

Here is my kayak rack. I added two sockets bolted underneath the roll bar, the place where the factory ski racks bolted to. I have a cross bar that simply slides into the sockets and is held there with quick release pins. For the rear, I built a trailer hitch receiver. I have a "T" bar that fits into the receiver to support the rear of the boat. This also works for bike racks, or for adding a trailer hitch ball. JoeO

Other photos. This set up also allows the boats to be carried with or without the top on. JoeO

Joe, that is one cool setup! I like the idea of having the top off while carrying boats. How do you like your remix? I have the Hoss (first LL boat I've owned) and I like how it handles, but its way too big for me. If I ever get stuck in a big pourover, it's gonna look like a pinball game. What creeks are you hitting over in SC? We have a crew here that goes to the Green quite a bit, and over to the Cheoah and other eastern goodies.

Mark, I really dig the bike rack setup too, looks pretty clean. I'm happy the car is short enough I can just toss my bikes up on the roof rack.

Eric, I could probably fit an open boat up there too, you know, were I to ever put one of those filthy things near the car. lol poke.gif

Here is my bike rack. My biggest concern when making it was that I wanted use of the removable top. I modeled it similar to the accessory bike racks that were made for the 914.

I love the Remix. It is very comfortable and forgiving. I am not the most adventerous boater. The Cheoah is probably too much for me. I run the Ocoee, Wilson Creek, Big Laurel, and other milder creeks. My son runs the harder stuff- the Green Narrows, Watauga, etc. I think I am probably too old for that stuff. Your set up looks good also.

My buddies have been after me to head to the Green with them. Something about being shoved violently in a sieve or undercut makes me a bit apprehensive. I love the Ocoee though, mainly "Hell hole". Funny, on this board, we avoid hell holes like the plague...at the Ocoee..I can't wait to dive off in one.

For the non-boaters of the group, hell hole is one of the named rapids on the Ocoee river in TN. If you're rusty, stay out of it. Here on the board, if the hell hole is rusty, noone is usually looking forward to getting in it. =) Funny how that works, huh.
