insecticidal soap? also check out a systemic pesticide, last choise for me. make sure the area under the drip line to the base of the plant is cleared of debris. brad, when bugs kill a $700 plus plant it hurts. it's not like they are a replaceable 914.

"weevil destroy you!"
What about an army of praying mantis' (to eat the weevils)? I've actually seen some around here last summer (are they native?). Can ladybugs eat the weevils?? Ladybugs sure are agressive.
(edited to make clearer what the heck I was saying...more scotch!)

like ladybugs (just another beatle, no that would be ringo), the mantis is your friend. carnivors in the insect world. they won't eat the plants.

Strawberry Root Weevils. Try spraying with Orothene insectacide every couple of weeks for abot 2 months. Not sure if it is still available cause of the tree huggers.
They'll come back after a time.

brad, when estate sized houses are built, do you think they buy the 14" rhodys at homedespot? there is a triving highend landscape market for mature plants. if the weevils don't gettum.

I love shopping for big trees. There's the Hemi parked between rows of big 8-10' box Pepper trees.
The tree in the foreground will go for about 5 grand.
I'm picking up a $15K 84" box Chamaerops humilus next week (one of 4 needed). Exciting yes?!
Like my boss says, I get all the fun.

. love the ot. PLANT GUYS RULE!!! do you use one of the trucks with the hydrolic rams that go into the soil to dig holes and place the trees?
kevin

Apr 18 2004, 08:40 PM
Yes, we do in fact rule.
No, the Vermeer spade is not commonly, if ever, used in SoCal. The boys down here excavate by hand, shaping the rootball, then side box, bottom box then crane it out. Or if the tree is being relocated on site and is good size, it can be rolled, or have a semi truck flatbed trailer backed up under it and move it on out.
I'll have to figure out how to scan the photo of the largest tree I've ever seen moved...in a 32' or so box. Sheesh.
I get to pick out and layout on the jobs mega bucks worth of trees every year. It's real fun.

man that rocks. if i wasn't a web designer, i'd do something with plants. i worked at a nursery through all four years of high school, and now that i've got my own family and house, i'm lovin' it. boxed trees are great, we had a nice gold-thread chamaecyparis (sp?) in a large pot, but the ice killed it.
our next job is to fill the yard with rhodies and salal!

Geez Kevin things are really popping. Too bad you couldn't hide behind the flowers a little better. Still, they are spectacular enough that no one would notice the old guy with the mustache sneekin into the picture.
