Sounds like a stupid question (especially for someone with reasonable mechanic skills).
I'm selling a customer's 914 engine. Isn't this a direct bolt in for a '77 bus? For a 914 "specialist", you'd think I'd know more about VW's, but I don't. 914 and 911's I know.
I'm guessing it'll need the engine tin and exhaust from the bus too?
Thanks in advance!

I think you'll need the oil filler, dipstick, engine mounts, shift rod, and probably a few others as well. Don't know a lot about them myself.

what you need:
Flywheel from a 76-83 Bus/vanagon (228mm)
swap the engine tin from the 77 bus also.. and the engine mount bar and supports that bolt to the case.
what are you doing for fuel delivery/induction???

I have a 914 2.0 that came out of a bus. It used the VW tin and flywheel, and had the oil filler converted. So, no, it is not a direct bolt in, but it is not too far off. It is the mods to the case that will be most difficult since a passage has to be openned, some stud holes drilled and tapped.

It is a bolt in, if the flywheel is swapped, and the tin.... Thats close enough to "bolt in" to get the term in my opinion...
The two engines are identical, except for small details... There is nothing magical about the 914 version, it is still a TIV..
The 2.0 914 heads are way too weak for a bus, remember you are pushing nearly 5,000 pounds.
I learnbed about TIVs from working on busses that other guys could not figure out.... I have the interchange memorized. I also have the parts you need to do it- all of them.

Won't you need to use the Bus oil filler and dipstick setup? Requires drilling in most 914 cases (no opening at the front corner of the case), which takes it out of "bolt-in" IMHO. Not difficult, mind you, but not bolt-in.

You don't have to... the 914 arrangement will work fine as long as you shorten the dipstick tube a tad to aid in getting the dipstick out at an angle...

You can just open the top hatch to check/fill the oil. A '77 bus has a 2nd hatch on the floor just inside the cargo door.
Or
Get a bendable dipstick out of a rabbit etc. cut and mark it for the T4 oil depth, plus bend the dipstck tube a bit.
Filling the oil with a stock 914 filler is a PITA but do-able. You could make a custom shorter filler and cap.
