Engine removed early 70's by Stoddart and converted to 2.2.

Darren, that is hard to be certain of. I would guess in the range of 6404960 to 6404980
They tend to jump around a bit. Are you now located in the UK?

Hi, Yes i have moved back to UK and have car here. If i go backwards from a known numbers car and ignore any jumping around of numbers then it would be 6404959 which is rihjt where you said.

How are the engine numbers in regards to the Vin # ?
are they exact....off by a few numbers up or down ....
or random?
I know the engine from my car was sold 30 years ago(before I owned it).
I have a short stroke 2.5 in the car at present ...just curious

Is there a more certain way of finding a powerplant original to car I own 70 914/6 1255 I have posted a long block for sale 6405275 but am looking for the original
davep
To find the original engine to a car you must first know what it is either through documentation that came with the car (such as the original Maintenance Record book with both the VIN and engine # written at the time of purchase) or through obtaining the engine # from factory sources such as the COA. Since Porsche has cracked down on information release in the past year or so it has become nearly impossible to learn the serial of an unknown engine. I have been able to obtain the engine # through a source I have developed, but the cost is quite significant; contact me for details.

Guestimating the range within which your engine may be found is difficult. I do not believe it is possible to go through the entire production process and have the VIN assigned as the car comes off of the assembly line and thus have the cars emerge in VIN sequence. For the 914/6 the fully trimmed bodies arrived from Karmann to have the drive train installed. Production logistics dictates that pools (four engine types and two transmission types) of engines and transmissions be in the assembly area to pick from. The assembler would choose an engine and transmission at random from the appropriate pool to install in the car. Replenishment of the pools would be done as required, but I doubt that the pools would be empty very often. As is common in such cases it happens that the last in can be the first out. So in a small range of cars, say 20, the engine & transmission serials can be quite random. In the case of my 74 Limited Edition, the engine should have been installed in October, but was actually installed in February; this is a pretty extreme example though.

I have been collecting data for many decades and can make some educated guesses as to a potential range, but knowing exactly is not possible. I do welcome new data points from everyone (VIN, engine & transmission #'s, plus paint code and chassis production #) to help build the database and make it easier to narrow the ranges.

Hi, I have a '70 914-6 for which I have only the case (and boxes of mismatched later parts). I'd love to find a more complete original 6 motor to use to build up my case. My car is 2255 and engine is 6405487.

Thanks in advance for any help you can offer.

Vin # 9140431095 orig engine # 6404638
Vin # 9140432567 orig engine # 6405714
Also I know of an anomaly near my car #1095;
9140431093 has orig. eng. 6404596
= 42 missing engine #s !

Here's mine to bracket yours:

VIN # 9140432580 orig. engine # 6405718 via original maintenance book, COA pending restoration and verification by Porsche Classic. Car was originally sold in Arkansas.

So my chassis number is 13 off from yours, engine # is 4 off from yours.

I have another 914/6 engine block, can't remember how I got it though.

Found a longblock for sale, but I'm unsure where its from. The first 3 digits indicate 914/6, but the last 4 are baffling to me. It doesn't seem to match up with 914/6 numbers. doesn't look like its from a 1970 911 either?

Any insight on what this was from?

Thanks in advance!

6401662 is far too high for type 901/36 914/6 Euro engine. Is there an engine type present? What are the case cast in #'s on both sides below the oil return tubes; 101.xR & 102.yR? The revisions # may decide the year. I'm guessing it is an interesting typo.
