Is the current thinking that both the metal rings and the paper gaskets between the cylinders and the heads and the cylinders and the case can be eliminated in the assembly of a Type IV motor?

NO with the new vw 1.8 spanish heads no head gaskets but with stock by all means cylinder head gaskets and cylinder base gaskets!!!!!!

Then lapping the cyl's to the heads is a practice when no gaskets are used to help head sealing.
