are they "ball" type to?

What do I want?

Steel ball type ~ $25 a set

Alloy closed ~$100 set - but not clear if they are ball type

Alloy open ~ $75 set - look tapered to me - evil bay

Alloy OEM (claimed) ~$160 set - evil bay look like ball type

Who / what should I get? should I buy steel for now and buy alloy later?

I bought ball type steel open ones on Evilbay ~25 for my dials ( same as Fuch). if you want the closed look you can buy the plastic covers to go over the lugs for ~20.

I would go with factory alloy ones for street/show use or open steel ones for track use.

You definitely want the closed alloy type. Just to be self promoting we have a set of 20 new ones that are alloy and polished and only for the Porsche alloy wheels that we bought when we purchased the remaining mid america stock for 80 bucks for the set! Not black but polished alloy and cannot be beat.

The factory closed ones are by far the nicest, but if you want to club race, you need the open steel ones (so tech inspectors can verify adequate stud length past the lugnut).

The open steel ones are stock Type 2 '71> nuts...hence the nickname "bus nuts".
