I've been considering replacing the lug bolts
for my wheels, have a set of Fuchs and Pedrinis,
with screw in studs and lug nuts. Has anyone here gone this route?

I'm looking for suggestions, recommendations,
opinions, reservations. What size studs do I need, where can I find them?

do it right (splined studs pressed into spot-faced holes) or not at all.

typically the screw in studs are made from "crap" and dont hold very well. Most in the industry would not recommend this setup. They tend to come loose even though the lug nut is tight. There is a way to go to studs... but it is a lot of work. We use Verbus studs (factory Porsche pieces) and 911 steel lug nuts.

Screw-in studs came on my old 1.8. They sucked--badly.

The rears were too short for complete engagement in alloy wheels. Not safe.

The lug nuts had the wrong curvature to seat in the "divots" around the 914 wheels' bolt holes. Adaptor washers were used. Not safe.

They would occasionally decide to loosen on their own. Not safe.

Then one fine day as I was swapping wheels between cars, one of the studs backed out (instead of the nut unscrewing) along with the threads in the rotor. Whoops.

I very very strongly recommend NOT using those.

I've had them on before... they blow goats! they aren't long enough and they thend to try and back themselves out...

I've thought about going to a wheel shop and seeing f the can press some REAL studs in, but haven't given it TOO Much thought...

but a wheel shop can do it...

for completeness, let me mention that 'back in the day' when these cars were new and Porsche people were un-used to the idea of lug bolts, the threaded studs were sold in sets of 4 -- this was enough for one complete car, because the intent was that you would replace ONE stud per hub giving you a place to 'hang' a wheel for people doing lots of AX.

in that application, they're MAYBE ok. i doubt it's enough of a plus to make it worthwhile, but that's the historical perspective on this part. they were never intended to be used to replace all 4 lug bolts per hub.

(when i AXd my GTI and swapped roadwheels at least 4X a weekend, i learned to use a big tapered drift to align one set of holes and support the wheel while i shoved a lug bolt into another hole...)

They suck so bad...only AA would consider selling them.

Regarding pressing in factory studs, what is involved
in this beyond spotfacing the back of the hubs and pressing the studs in? Do the stock holes need to be reamed to accecpt the studs?

I just noticed when I typed the B word, the "holio" suffix

I had my 2.0 car studded, and it's great. I think all that was involved was machining the back to make the studs square. My mechanic built a jig to do the rear without taking them off the car.
