We started this build about 5 years ago. Paul the owner was not in a hurry and at the time we were having problems with reliable body men. We since found a good body man who has done other work for us.
The car was purchased in Florida by its original owner, she had alot of fun with the car slalom racing. She then move up to Pensylvania were she passed on and left car to her brother. A few years of the car sitting in his garage he then sold it to Paul.
Getting ready to strip the paint

Original paint under fuel tank paint color decided

After walnut blasting

Nothing abnomal here,all was replaced

Some minor body damage

Looks awesome... can't wait to watch this one. Love that black paint dripping down the front shock tower in the first picture... perfect!
Tell Mr. Lazy Butt to head down to the border and pick up his calipers!

Looks like a nice, straight chassis. It should look great when returned back to the Signal Orange color.
Be sure to check the hellhole (underneath and in front of the battery) for rust before starting any paint project.
Does anyone know why the factory painted the top of the shock towers black on the factory -6s? Mine is done the same way, and I could never really figure out why.

I told Paul, who owns this car, that I believe it was a tad more attention to detail on the -6's. The factory set up the suspension and painted it black to mark it as set. Any adjustments post that painting process would be noticable.
Kind of like a wax seal on a letter (anyone remember letters?)

It was a sloppy brush job with a flat black paint.

Great; I am looking forward to watching the progress. Please post lots of pictures as they keep me motivated and working towards that goal. I am still planning to have my six driving come spring time. I do not plan to do a full rebuild for a couple of years.

Looks like Blutorange to me , but colors on line are iffy.
The metal looks great. The brased in battery support is so 20 years ago. And ugly.
Fill that wrong side antenna hole and forget about a radio, can't hear it anyway. What's the VIN ?

Car looks really nice. Amazing job on stripping the paint. How was this done?

The paint stipping was done with walnut shell. I prefere this method, less heat and less abrasive. I have not tried soda blasting, I understand it is a good way to go. I will get some pics of the finished paint at the end of this week. The "hell hole" was completely and properly rebuilt. It was one of the better ones I have seen.
"Mr. Lazy Butt" did pick up the calipers. Very nice work done by Eric. Thanks.

This is going to be an awesome build. What a great tub. Thanks for sharing Jake.
We have another pair of GT calipers in the works for Paul but he is being ever so gracious and letting us "use" them for a top secret project.

The job the walnut shell media sure did a nice job. How much time did this take? What grade and how much media did you go through?

I'll fess up ...I'm the owner on this one.... have read the posts, and since I am such a luddite, will try to respond in the order they were made.
a)Jake's post that started this all. I got the car from a fellow in Pennsylvania, back in 2003.
Just to set the record straight re it's history just in case the previous owner(s) happens on this(it's been 7 years, so Jake's blurring the facts a bit) The car was originally sold to a fellow in Florida...he campaigned it a bunch up and down the East coast, beefed up the suspension, but not much else, then sold it to a lady in Pennsylvania...she drove it for a few years, and left it there in the care of her brother when she moved somewhere West (I"m thinking Colorado)...
b)Yeah Eric....I love that drip of paint also...and if I'd known Jake had snapped pics of the shock towers, I wouldn't have asked you to bother with sending pics....but thanks for the pics, and the info on the paint used. Guess I don't have to be too careful re application
"Lazy Butt" took a half day off Dec 23 to head across the Border to pick up his gift from Santa....
AWESOME
Eric, you're right, you RESTORE calipers.....'xcept I'm not sure they looked that good when they came from the factory. Sorry I didn't let you know sooner, have been busy.
c)the hell hole actually was heaven. Not more than marginal surface rust at the bottom in the engine compartment. The car, beneath the hideous repaint, was remarkably free of rust....just the battery tray area, and some small areas in the gutters of the front trunk where the seal sits.....and only evidence of body damage was to the right rear quarter, and a bullet hole in the left rear quarter
d)to Cairo94507....I'd love to send pics, but I have to ask someone at the office how to do it every time I try.....I am so useless....but I will see if Jake can post them from time to time...
MOTIVATION...I don't think you need any...I read your thread..."gobsmacked" would be the Aussie phrase. I have marginal talent, as you'll note if you read down to the next subparagraph.....and you'll have your car on the road before "Lazy Butt" does, regardless.
Fact is, I'm a tad reluctant to say anything, or post anything, on this site....there is just too much talent out there....noting your car, that of Eric, and the "tangerine" build that is in one of the threads.... and others..... Can't compete with that, but sure love seeing them all
e)to rgalla9146...GEEZ...I should of sent you those pics 5 years ago. You just HAD to notice the antenna on the wrong side.... I didn't...the car has fresh paint, and I lost a lot of sleep last night, all cuz of that oversight. I am so @#$@# at myself. You'd think I would notice that one....I"ve had 5 years to pick that up.
Maybe now someone can educate me....cuz there is no evidence of a hole on the drivers side being patched/repaired. Did the factory predrill ALL of the cars...or did they leave it to the dealers.. Please, someone out there tell me that the factory did them all, and Hans decided on an ad hoc basis which side would see the drill.
If it is wrong....there is an area in the engine bay that probably needs to be sorted out...and I may be sorely tempted to have the shop patch, paint and drill....
ARGHHHH
The car is signal orange, it's just the pics...it is a 1970...710...so was on the same assemblty as 705 and 709 GT (trainers)
The battery tray area got nicely cleaned up
g)ERIC...I thought it was going to be a "secret" SECRET....
Eric can say I"m "gracious...but truth is those calipers won't see brake dust for years....too much else to wrap up before that project gets underway.
Can't wait to see and hear what you have in progress
h)the car was sent to a shop to walnut blast...no idea how much media was used...but I daresay it was done pretty quick...don't think it was at the shop more than a day or two...Jake can set me right. Be carefull if you use it...can warp flatter areas, eg, doorskins and front and rear lids....we stripped those first before it went out
Now that I'm done with that...Can anyone educate me re
a)are the mufflers on 6s different than on 911s.... I think I'll need a muffler, as I'm trying to get collector plates. The car came with headers and small cans...it sounded great, and more power...so if anyone has any suggestions how I can get closer to that, while APPEARING stock, I'd be grateful.
I do have heat exchangers...really would prefer not using them...but I'm afraid collector plates may require them...unless there's some kind of mod out there that looks akin
I do have the snowscoop/plow rear valance, and probably have to use that as well.
b)Anybody have a very clean Sigla windshield they're prepared to sell (and ship to Washington)....I have a fellow in Calif that may sell/send one, but he hasn't yet confirmed
c)I dug through my stash...(of parts)....and noticed that one of the door glass windows has a factory green tint...the rest of the glass does not appear to have that. I do have an extra, clear window glass..does anyone know if the factory did the tint back in 1970...and if so, is there a preference
d)source for OEM carpet....? I think AA says they have some....Anybody else???
Thanks for the posts....am grateful to Jake for telling me about the site...not many 14s up here (I love them, have since the 70s, and have a 74 1.8 that I/and Jake are getting roadworthy for my daughter....BTW...it needs a front hood, if anybody in Washington state has a decent/unkinked one.
Enjoy reading the posts, great group!
Paul
