I’m replacing the alternator in my ’70 1.7 teener. The cooling boot/vent whatever it is called was missing (99.9% of it). I located an alternator air exhaust elbow on-line that I think attaches to the port on the back of the alternator but I’m not certain where the other end goes. There doesn’t appear to be a place for it to attach to. This elbow is only about 3.5-3” overall so either it isn’t the right part or I’m missing something, figuratively and literally such as more tin. There is a small port slightly below the alt. pivot bolt area coming out of the fan housing. It has a rectangular opening of about 2” x ¾” but for all I know that is part of the heating system and the elbow I have won’t stretch that far.
Would anyone have a picture of what this “boot” is supposed to look like and how it hooks up? Comments & pics are much appreciated.

The round end of the boot goes in the blower housing and is held in place with a spring clip ... good effin luck getting it in place without dropping the engine and pulling 1/2 of the blower housing.

Here's a picture of mine. Ignor the ground wire. The elbow goes from the flattened nipple on the sheetmetal cap on the alternator, and terminates in the fan impeller housing. I think it's pretty clear in the pic. The thing I learned when I was reassembling, and I had heaps of misc parts piled about, is that there are two versions. One is much smaller than the other at the fan housing end. I suspect the smaller one is the earlier one, and it was opened up to improve cooling, maybe when the exhaust was rerouted forward under the alternator in '75? (someone chime in here)

Also, there is a wire oval ring that holds the end in the fan housing. It sits in a groove in the ID (or was it the OD?) of the elbow where it protrudes into the housing. I don't know if the elbow can be installed with the fan in because of this retainer ring. I replaced my rubber elbow with a new one. It was still available in 2002 when I was reassembling, and may still be available today.

The other comment- that sheetmetal "cap" on the alternator- it originally had a gasket under it, but it was NLA at least at the time.

They are still available nw, check VW online sites, I can't remeber whihc one I used, the difference in the boots, as stated above is one is for the 70 amp alt. and the other for the 55 amp.. one is semi oval and the other round for the alternator end abut the other end for the fan housing is the same round..


here it is , I found them.. you see what I am saying, and they are new and come with the strap and retaining ring ect..

Thanks to all. The pics were very helpful & after standing on my head for awhile see where the elbow goes. I did pick up a new elbow so hopefully it will all go together without too much hassle.

Careful using online VW stores for 914 part number reference! Porsche parts catalog as well as Pelican Parts actually list 3 hoses-
021.903.655 1970-71 1.7
021.903.655B 1972+ certain engine numbers, presumably 1.7?
021.903.655D 914 1.8/2.0

A bit hard to decipher the applicability...

It also shows two different size circlips at the fan housing end, 44.5mm and 50.5mm that have the same applicability as the B and D versions, though the two circlips have the same part number! I suspect the larger one will work find in the smaller hose.

So I still think there are differences by engine and model year at the fan housing end!

I recommend the site and the ccooling boots I link too. I have bought and installed both, and am currently using the 55 amp.. the 70 amp I sold to a member and he has it installed no issues, just as i did.. but agree.gif you must understand what your doing when you cross over any vw parts, but once you have faith and understand you will find NLA 914 stuff being sold openly and widely available, for example thermostat bellows are thought to be NLA, but I learned the factory maker "Wahler" and the operating temp. 65-70 vs the others they made for other vw applications and damn if I cannot get a dozen right now.. and have one installed working perfectly.. 914 is a VW/Porsche not a Porsche/Porsche.. Alot of times VW parts sales only undersatnd the VW's that these parts are used for and not the 914, and visa versa/.. More often than not if you buy a part marketed for a 914 you will pay more for the same part listed elsewhere for less but marketed for a VW Bus..

I am all about blowing $$$ on my 914 but am also about getting new parts that am told unavailable..

I am reviving this thread since I have some up to date info and personal experience with a source for the early Part#: 021 903 655B cooling duct from the "D" shaped alternator outlet to the larger opening cooling shroud with the internal spring clip retainer, AA Performance Products currently has them in stock.

I ordered one and installed it this weekend. Rubber seems pliable and suitably thick, fit was good. I did end up using the original worm clamp and retaining clip as they just seemed to fit a little better, but the ones with the boot from AA would work.

I found many sources but most out of stock. These guys had it in stock and I had the part in less than a week. Hopefully this helps someone.
