Great cars! Good luck on the projects - I can relate to doing two cars at once. As far as the color change, it's your car and your wallet. I agree 100% with Eric though; there is only one way to change the color and that's strip it completely and start from scratch.

This one used to be a skinny Light Ivory car smile.gif

Google for IRFANVIEW & download it (free) then use it to downsize the files (also converts format, etc.) - really easy to use & been around for at least a decade as freeware. Most newer cameras do 1 meg or bigger file sizes, so they have to go to more than 1/2 the original files size. IMHO the IRFANVIEW is easier to use, has more options & does a better job of shrinking the pix, than does MS Paint.

Here's how to upload info for here:

I'll be Weenie #2 & say that IMHO you're pretty much always better off sticking with any classic car's original color - unless it's going to be modified anyway. So it depends on how original your 914s are & what you plan to do to & with them.

Mine was originally L80E Light Ivory (white) from the factory - which is not my personal favorite 914 color, but it was repainted to gold by the time I bought it 3 years old in Dec. 75, then I did 2 further color changes in my DD days. So in researching for my current full resto, I looked at changing to a Marathon or Alaska Metallic Blue vs back to "white" & did an informal market survey on 914 resales.

I found that original 914s which were restored or refurbished in a different color tended to sell for less than ones in the original color - some by as much as 40-50% lesser price/value for what seemed to be at least roughly comparable cars (I did say it was "informal"). Also this tracks with what I'd read in other classic car & sports car restoration publications.

So I started a 12 step "recovery to white" program, and will be restoring mine back to the L80E it never was for me! laugh.gif

In the end, it's your preferences & your checkbook! biggrin.gif

thumb3d.gif A rarity! Ultimately it's your call but I would not change the color of an original special order.

It may just be the photo but the '70 looks like it may already have been changed. It looks more like Sunflower yellow which showed up a few years later than the Canary yellow of 1970. What is the code on the Karmann plate say? It also has the later style steel wheels and appears to have bumperettes on the front. What is the VIN?

The 70 has a color code of L11E Canary Yellow and the vin is 4702913105....anything or info that you share is much appreciated, all of you folks so far have been great. Hope to meet some down the road at 914 events in the future...we really are excited about doing this together.

Sepia is a very milky light brown, IMO that looks much closer to Copper Brown Metallic a 76 912/911 color.

Very cool Ferg, nice wheels....several nice cars. When you have a moment can you look at what we posted for pics and tell possibly the color brown it is? The color code of 98 is that just for a "general brown" of specific? Much appreciated and again very cool my wife is a little happier. Thanks and we'll be in touch!

No, 98 is "Custom Porsche Color" meaning it could be any Porsche color that was available at the time for any of their vehicles ...

http://www.914world.com/bbs2/index.php?act=colors

So far, there are only a few verified 98 colors that were used on 914s, which are:

Aubergine
Guards Red (Indischrot)
Lilac (Flieder)
Raspberry
Sahara Beige
Sepia Brown

So, if yours is not Sepia Brown we would have a new color to add to that list ...

I know those 2 cars. Looked at them a few times in Junction City. I am just down in Corvallis if you need anything. The yellow was repainted & isn't the original color anyway. It is a decent paint job though so no real reason to paint it right away. You hve your work ahead of you with them. The yellow one is not as big a resto though. I think the brown one had some issues with the passenger side rear quarter.

Are these your first 914's? If so you have no idea what sickness has taken hold of you evilgrin.gif
Ferg
Copper Brown Metallic like the pic above was a 76 color for 911's and 912's based on your one photo that would be my guess. Post some new pics to this thread, we can figure it out.

Look for original paint on both 914s under the carpets, up under the dash, inner thresholds/longitudinals, behind the gas tank & interior & exterior firewall pads, the drip pan on the engine lid, uo in the slots where the targa top rear latches are on the roll-bar, etc. for hints of the original colors where a repaint might not have reached (unless they did a full strip down & repaint), to verify the original color - esp. on the 76. These areas are also likely to be largely unfaded (door jambs are too easy to repaint, so not as reliable).

I agree that it doesn't look like a Sepia Brown, and it looks like a metallic paint.

Also, there is an outside chance that a Certificate of Authenticity (COA) from Porsche Cars North America (PCNA) may actually list the original "98" color chosen by the OO/1st buyer, depending on how complete the Kardex factory records were (and whether the PCNA-COA staff reads the codes right dry.gif ). This will also tell you if the engine and transaxle case nos. still match the original (photo them first to verify & send).

Porches Club of America (PCA) also gets $20 or so off the $100+ COA cost, as well as several 20% off orders from Porsche a year & a monthly national & local magazine - so well worth $42/yr. for you & wife IMHO - aside from their various events. I wasn't a member until I started a resto of my 73 914-2.0 in 09, but it's been well worth it to me, and many on here have been long time members - even back when the PCA's 356/911/912/etc. snobs turned their noses up at 914s. Nowadays most think they're cool. biggrin.gif

Here's other sources for the early 1970's colors for 914s (along with other references such on here at the 914 info above - so cruise around those websites). They also might help you on your work on the 914s - so go to their respective home pages & peruse their other sections (esp. Bowlsby's, rennlist & p914), as well as for finding the actual color once you find an unfaded & unchanged paint area as noted above.

The '76 could be special order color, which is quite rare! Sepia Brown? idea.gif

To Ferg & Sir Andy...2 questions maybe you can answer?

1. Is it possible that the color of our 76 914 is a copper metallic brown, from the factory. Code is 98 but after Ferg sent pics of all the "Brown Colors" we believe it is just that copper metallic brown...we rechecked the color code plate it in our opinion has NOT been removed or painted over as well as the sticker with the month/year and serial number. Is it possible & if so how do we add it to the overall color chart for 914's

2. If we want to do the rebuild of the engines/trannies ourselves (we have most all the equipment) how hard is it...we're half intelligent...well somedays more than others, LOL.

Thanks guys

Tom, Ferg sent us alot of "Brown" 911 carcolors. We beleive it is a "Copper Metallic Brown" we looked everywhere and it is the same, like you indicated above...the color code tag has not been removed nor has the sticker that indicates the month/year build. If it is how can we confirm and add to new color for a 914?

Mike

She has the #501 Cinnamon letherette interior that is for sure....thanks again for all the websites

BROWN RULES pray.gif I'd would need to see some more pics, not sure it's Sepia, maybe a door jamb close up that's not faded...?

Sepia is a very milky light brown, IMO that looks much closer to Copper Brown Metallic a 76 912/911 color.

Here is Sepia

Mike,
post a picture of the door jamb tag with the paint code and a picture of the original paint where it is the most vivid. Any otherwise protected area, good lighting and a little bit of cleaning should result in a good image of the paint.

A picture of the date code sticker in the door jamb would also help.

That should be enough to confirm that we have indeed found a new 98 code!

Two great projects ! Hope to you can bring both 914's to the WCR in Medford, OR in June.

Here's a link to the event, if it's like the last WCR held in Oregon, there will be a big turnout.

Yes these are our first ones but we think we got an ok deal...LOL, time will tell. We can use all the help we can get. Is it possible to contact you by phone? If not what about email. We think the 76 has a custom color...one to be added to the list? We know about the rust issues....are they that bad? Our friend owns an auto body & paint here in Salem.,.says they can be fixed. learned about the "Hell Hole" right away...yikes. Any help or thoughts is very much appreciated.

Good to talk to you Mike. Nice to have some more teeners close by too biggrin.gif . I was thinking this sunday afternoon might work if you wanted to come down. Otherwise it will be a few weeks.

Sounds like you have some good friends that can do the hell hole work too. That is a huge bonus. Talk to you soon

Mike, you can add a description, color info and a pic of each 914, under the "My Controls" section under the Personal Profile at Add/Edit VINs. I think Sir Andy does the color chart additions, so send him the pix he asked for in his message above.

With that unique special order color, I'd keep to the same in your resto if I were you - esp. if it's still the original engine in it, and of course if you can convince your wife to like the color cuz her car is so special! driving-girl.gif

My 73 2.0 has the earlier version of that color with a little less of the darker "cinnamon swirl" highlights - then called "Beige" leatherette & basketweave (#502 & #501), as they changed the fabrics from 73-74 to 75-76.
