How much is a '76 3.0 engine worth w/o history not running and out of the car?

PS: Is there a way I can check that the seller is the legal owner? Do I need a title copy to have the engine installed in a 914 in the state of NJ?

$1500 with decent leakdown results, maybe 2K.
It's a '78-'83 most likely, they only made a few 3.0 race engines before that.

It’s less than a grant. I figure if it doesn’t work at all I can part it and have a learning by doing experience.

Call the cops and give them the serial number ....... if it's on the hot sheet, they will pay you a courtesy visit or see if AAA will do it.
