Rick posted this picture in Mike's Porsche pickup thread. I didn't want to go completely off topic in that thread but I had to ask.

Am I the only one that thinks this is cool as hell? Does anyone have any more pics of 4wd 914's?

Yes, I'd drive a 4X4 914 too. What about a 4X4 914 pick up truck? Where are the photoshop experts.

RJMII
What chassis/subframe would fit under the 914? Talk about a heavy chassis stiffening kit.

Here's the background story on the car I posted. I called on an ad on craigslist for a euro 928 engine. I ended up purchasing the engine from a guy that lives here in MN about 150 miles south of me. I was unable to pick up the engine as he had 5 feet of snow blocking his garage door. I exchanged email with the guy over the winter. He sent me that photo of the 914 4X4 he and his son built many years ago. That is his son sitting in the car. Anyway, they sold it many years ago and lost track of it.

Ya, it is what I would build if I did one. I think he said they used an early Ford Bronco chassis under it.

Oh, and they had a stock one that matched the 4X4 how cool is that?
Dr Evil
I bet a Bronco II chassis would fit right under our cars smile.gif

I think it is cool smile.gif The red one is the nicest I have seen.

Here is from another thread:

make that photo disappear! it'll give dan root ideas!!!!!

I was right, Bronco II WB = 94", 914 WB = 94.5"

I had an 86 Eddie Bower Bronco II with push button 4x4 and a 5 speed. 2.9L engine called a "beater" because when it ran you couldnt beat it and when it didnt you wanted to.

This would be pretty easy I think idea.gif

That white one has a disturbing resemblance to a Triumph TR-7.

Based on the location of the white one .... that's the VW parts place near Joe Sharp in Huntington Beach, CA. Maybe he knows more.

AND

It doesn't appear to be 4X4.

The white one belongs to Roy. I caught him over at the Vee Dud shop one day. I don't remember the car being 4 WD though. Never seen the car again... smile.gif

I think 4x4 is kool
but I think it would be awesome if you go mid-engine set-up
like those Micky Thompson trucks! aktion035.gif

What is that fan on the white one?
Eric_Shea
That "Baja" version tickles my funny bone. Agreed... doesn't need to be 4x4. Look at the cool 911 Paris/Dakar cars they built over the years.

Wonder where that "Russel Custom Homes" racing team car is today?

I would love one in L96D please? I could drive it in the winter and get up my driveway, a no brainer. Plenty of bronco II and CJ7's around here. Hmmmmmmm, jrust find me a decent tub!

I bet that fan is for a oil cooler?

I'll bet this would be quite doable in a 914 set up.

Think cow-bars, lights... those fiberglass GT body panels. Quick. PhotoChop guys... rejoyce!

I'd imagine that keeping it mid-engine would make it difficult to do a 4x4.

Maybe get some of those electric motors for the front wheels...

My Norton picked it up too. It's not the first time hackers have attacked his site and added this crap.

It's been infected for years ... sad.gif

I emailed him several times and he said he would fix it, but it still has the hackers links embedded in the page.

easily done with a front wheel drive power pack mounted longitudinally [engine and tranny] then drive shafts to the diffs from the trans axle.

slap.gif Don't make me come work on your 914! laugh.gif

2 years ago I bought somones abandoned Bug 4x4 project that had a bug body on a Bronco II frame with 2.9. I hacked away at it, welded like crazy, got it pretty close to driving and gave up myself. You can do it, but I stopped and asked why? Did I really want a water-cooled Bug? Not really. So I scrapped the whole project.

This time around I'm going for more utility, so Squareback and going to "keep it in the family" and install a Vanagon Syncro system probably next couple of years. I'm kinda partial to the air-cooled stuff.

Or just buy this:

Been done...

My Brother and myself bought a body 2 years ago to build one. We intended to put it on a Bronco II frame. Then life changed and all has been on hold. Maybe someday driving.gif
