Full Version: OT - No PC - carbon fiber C-type body arrived today

Hi All –
Thought some might find this interesting – pretty excited.

We are doing a jag C-type replica. It is pretty exact, being built off of the factory blue prints. Initially, the upper half of the body and the clamshells were going to be fiberglass, as having them done in aluminum would more than double the cost of the build.

About a month ago we received a call from the builder that he had a pal in the aerospace field who really wanted to branch out into doing some car stuff with carbon fiber. After many discussions, he said he would recreate the body for our C-type. The molds were shipped out last month. The body was delivered yesterday!

It weighs less than a third of the fiberglass body. If the layup lines were a bit better, I would almost think about not painting it. The lower half of the body/passenger compartment will still be aluminum.

Very Interesting.....

You are in CO, and Lockheed Martin's "center of excellence" for carbon fiber is in Waterton canyon.....

I might have even worked with this person.
Ask if they did any of the work on Mars Global Surveyor, Stardust, or Genesis.

They do work that is beautiful, but the public rarely gets to see it.

How did this person do the large pieces?
Depending on which type of resin was chosen, you might need an autoclave big enough.

You know mark, that is totally doable. There is a company called JPS motorsports that builds 356 replicas.

They were known for doing a pretty high quality Speedster (the combination tube frame and VW pan versions) and recently started doing coupes - so they obviously have the mold for a non-unibody body.

What engine are you using for the car?

Hi John -
It is a 3.4L, punched 40 over, using series 3 XJ cams. All other internals are C-Type “correct” and fully polished as per the original. Approx 9.5:1 comp, triple 45’s and a lightened flywheel, wet sump. At sea level, the motor dyno’d at 340hp. The original cars maxed at 220hp

Here is a picture of the nearly completed chassis. The only deviations from stock are the two upright blades at the cowl (needed for the non-stock body) and the brake calipers/system and pedal cluster. We are hoping to do some machining on the pedals to at least make them the correct shape. Notice we already had the Wilwood logos machined off of the calipers. Finding the correct 1953 calipers on for the first car to use disc brakes at Lemans was simply not going to happen.

The one bummer about the car is that it has two doors – which is totally wrong for the cars that ran Lemans – they only had a driver side door. The molds for this body were taken off of the red 1953 Mille Miglia car which had the two door set up. -

JPS does not make the shells...I have the contact in Mexico that makes the coupe bodies and sells them to JPS.

They will sell direct, and its quite reasonable.

Litterally just received these pics - body is finally mounted on the chassis. After seeing it assembled, I am again going back and forth with my brother on if we should paint it, clear coat it, or maybe a clear coat tinted with british racing green. Kinda fun.

I like the idea of tinting the clear with the green. But no matter what you do its gonna look awesome!

here is what it would look like fully painted.

I got the idea of the tinted clear coat from this Bugatti.

I dont know. The stealth factor might be the best bet - i.e. having the car look stock until the hood is opened (we are definitely not painting the underside of the front clamshell). The motor came out great, so it will still be pretty neat with the hood up.

As sweet as that CF looks, I still vote for the classic Green... You might do what Brumos did on some of there racers with CF lids, orange paint, white meat ball, then the number was just a clear over the CF, very sweet... This looks like a great project..

Well, here she is. The c-type is finally done (less the front grill and rear trunk lid/spare tire cover being installed).

It has been just over two years. Many of the delays were self inflicted - I really wanted the details to be spot on. Love the little junk - things like the gauges/switch gear, the wiring, the work light on the firewall, the "Mille Miglia" 8" lucas driving light behind the grill, the gasket around the air intake - none of that junk sounds like much time, but it all adds up.

The steering wheel is finished wrong - it should be smooth and shiny. I will get that fixed locally. I also need to source the correct loom material for the plug wires. Other than that, I am very very pleased.

Here are a couple more. I thought this was extremely cool. On the original car, the air scoop on the hood was a direct feed to a box over the carbs - no air filter at all.

On this car, I had the air box made just a tad bigger to allow the fitment of individual cone filters. It looks completely stock from the outside - you would have to measure the box to know it was not correct. Kinda slick.

The square hole on the right side of the car in this pic is where the air intake interfaces with the air cleaner box....

Looks fantastic. When will it be at the local shop so we can all sneak a peek? Throw in a few pix of the 6 project so there is some 914 content. By the way the Mustang is all gone to various good homes.

No no no......
My brother in-law's dad died when he was 9 (late 60's/very early 70's). He had an early mustang that both my brother in law and his brother thought had been sold shortly thereafter.

This was found not to be the case. His Mom had a very hard time dealing with the loss, and basically became a hoarder. She had a stroke last year that made it impossible for her to ever live alone again (nearly vegetative). This meant cleaning out the house (massive project - MANY dumpsters). About half way in to cleaning out the garage - you guessed it - they found the car. Still had the pack of cigarettes on the dash from the night he had his heart attack. From this pics we had sent, it looked to be a real time machine and in really great shape. We shipped it to Colorado and were going to have it restored to give to my brother in law as a surprise.

Unfortunately the surprise was on us - it was a huge mess. It had been hit and poorly repaired several times. Tons of rust. Danny is a big time Mustang/Shelby guy so we gave it to him for parts.

Dust (rust) to dust............

We did find his pocket watch in the (spider infested) glove box however. It was neat to give that back to my brother in law. Still worked like a champ.

Dang that's one of my dream cars. VERY nicely done to you all! It's beautiful. Looks like an old thread that got revived but glad I caught it the 2nd time

Absolutely beautiful. The devil is in the details, but that is what separates the stunning from the also-ran. That car is epic, and the fact that it was built from the ground up to that level of detail is amazing. I envy your skills.
