Somebody (won't mention names) was sufficiently astute to notice that my freshly painted, just out of the shop, blazing signal orange 914-6 had the antenna mounted on the "wrong side" (passenger side)
Sleepless nights...how could I let that one pass...and can I live with myself if I don't remedy this.
Probably will bite the bullet, patch it up, and drill hole in nice, fresh paint...WTF
But before I venture down that road....better see if I get things right this time around.
Any advice re:
a) most likely correct manufacturer(s) of antennas for 1970 model....I ask, cuz I'm betting on Hirshmann and Bosch...(blue tip???)
If so, does anyone out there have nice ones...
AND/OR
A vendor has some nice looking NOS Poddigs...were they used...
It may be a bit important at this stage, cuz I gather the Poddigs have a slightly smaller cutout/hole for mounting.....
b)length of antenna....Hirshmann seems to be a tad over 90cm....Poddig has at least 2 lengths....100cm....and 150cmmmmmmmm

You could just patch the hole, install a radio blank and go without. I have no evidence my /6 ever had a radio. No cutout in the dash, no antenna hole, no speakers in the boxes, no cutouts in the door panels.

Weren't most radios a dealer installed item... I've seen some on the right, what's wrong with that?

On an automobile, +/- 30 inches is typically a sufficient wave-length for the standard FM broadcast band. The AM broadcast band would benefit from a somewhat longer antenna.
Use the following equation to find the quarter-wave length for any antenna:
234 divided by f (frequency in mHz) = 1/4 wave length antenna dimension.
So, 234/100 mHz (approx. center freq of FM band) = 2.34 ft (x 12) = 28.08 inches
The radio in my old 64 euro 911 is a Blaupunkt AM/FM/SW (short wave) receiver ... it has a little bit longer antenna than normal and was installed by the factory, not a US dealership.
I thought I read somewhere that radios in the 914s were dealer installed options (but don't hold me to it), so the location of antennas varied. The CW guys would know better than me.

You're right...and in some ways that would be the preferred way to go. Radios back then were not worth listening to anyway....and car sounds way better, regardless...
Guess I'm just being a pick...I kind of like the look of the period correct radio...have a very nice Blaupunkt waiting to go in...have good OEM speaker enclosures.....and would like to take the car on long drives if it ever gets done, and if I ever have a chance to drive it...so would run an ipod through the radio, still sound like crap, but sometimes a LONG drive gets a bit lonely....
AND....
I have hopes of doing a GT tribute some day...and it definitely wouldn't have a radio, so would like an optical viva la difference ....????

I think BOTH replies have been correct re dealer installed option....which is one reason I have been waffling about covering up the passenger side hole....and drilling a new one. I think the consensus amongst those who know a whole lot more about this than I (that means just about everyone...) is that on those cars (911 or otherwise) have left the factory with an antenna, it has been on the drivers side....so tradition points to drivers side. SO that has left me on the fence, since tradition is something, but .....
And as far as that goes, I don't really expect to "show" the car....hopefully it will be nice...but it will be a driver....

Porsche listed the Blaupunkt & Becker radios as a factory option nos. (see Jeff Bowlsby's 914 website under options), so some 914s must've had them, but they may have been packaged with the car for shipping (radio + speaker/antenna/install kit in 2 boxes), & then the dealer installed them.
Otherwise most were purchased at the dealerships or aftermarket, & installed by dealers or other supplier/self.
As I understand it, the antenna on the pass. side was for the electric/power antenna, & manual ones on the LF fender. So you could just go with the Hirshman electric antenna on the LF fender in the existing hole, & be done with it & without filling & drilling yet more holes in your new paint job.
There is this source for "correct" Porsche based audio stuff in Costa Mesa CA - Woody's - who sells both on evil-bay & at the big annual SoCal Porsche Swap Meet every year -

AFAIK the PCA judges do not gig for radio/antenna even at national, so long as it is the period correct stuff. It's when you get a "modern" radio/CD deck with speakers in the doors & other out of period stuff that gets you gig'ed.
BTW - speaker housings were all empty until the install kit was added - usually by the dealers, if not always - as I said above.
By the way guys, that Woody's place also sells an adapter for 3.5mm input to attach to the back of your vintage radio & hide inconspicuously, so that you can plug in your MP3 player, CD player, etc. - while keeping the vintage radio intact in the dash, as well as a set of small speakers for a 4x set-up they recco for early 911/912, which may fit behind the 914 seats if pushed up a bit (if you're not too tall), & they sit "loose" so you don't have to hack up the door panels & other interior parts!

My -6 also has a Blaupunkt AM-FM radio from the factory with a manual antenna on the driver's side fender.

My six currently has an antenna (driver's side) and a newer CD player. I am going to replace that unit with a period correct Blaupunkt when the time is right. However I do not envision listening to a radio when I will have either the 3.0 weber (presently) or the future 3.2 Motronic to listen to.

My signal orange 6 looked perfectly fine until I started digging 'round the World.
Ah well.
If thre's anything that confirms that an electric antenna is the distinguishing factor, I'd be happier than a pig in poop...easy fix, and I have a new electric Hirshmann that 's been sitting in a box for years.

That GT site is a very slippery slope....
That GT tribute that I hope someday to sort out...you know, the one that I hope to get at in maybe 3-4 years...the one that is(was) missing an engine....
I was just going to find a nice quiet 2.0 to installll...no fuss, no messing with front oil coolers, no oil lines to sort out...no locating rear brakes for a 6 (actually, I never did locate those...ERIC found those for me)...etc etc...
But it's still partly your fault...pretty humbling to see what can be done with a car that by rights should (well, maybe not should..but would) be parted out...and turn it into a real car...no, an unreal car...
I started with a pretty clean car...
Then I go and look at my antenna, and figure "what an a....(ntenna)...hole"...
Guess I'll hunt for a hirschmann.
Dare I ask....would an electric be passable as correct....I picked one up years ago, still in box.....

OR go to a BMW wrecking yard and get a 70's 320 electric antenna. Now U can keep the right side and it's out of sight. Then sell the new one on the Bird Board Bmw site for real money.

Yeah I've always been one that is able to see the end of the project before the start - kind of like an Artist before he starts Painting. My car was such a POS, but it had Parts, then I bought more Parts, then more Parts.
The Real funny thing is the Douche Bag that I bought the car from said I ruined it by putting a Set of Real M471 Gt Flares on it ( of course he was going to do a VIN Swap)

I am using the Poddig and it is bigger no smaller, and it is a dman fine antenna.. the longer one is nicer 150cm but on the long side.. the 100cm is nice too and actually 7 inches longer then hirscchman, there is a reason Podding used those lenthgs.. to much info. for here..
I wish I had my antenna on the passenger side.. Thats justy unique. My wiper are on the passenger side and I put them there..
Poddigs blow away the aftermarket hirschman.. Bosch blue tip is to Collector Priced.. Yet I have saeen Poddig in VW Muesem for well over 1oo euros..

many different antennas were installed by the dealers, often times the cheapest they could buy from a supplier to make money selling to the new 914 buyer. The one that should go with the car is a hirschmann mounted on the left front fender just in front of the door. It has a small hole and dedicated hardware. If your hole is bigger, it was drilled for one of these who knows what, aftermarket antennas and there is really no hardware to correct it, but rather find an antenna that fits the larger hole.

My two cents to get my post count up. I read somewhere that the reason some antennas were installed on the right was because that was how long the cable was to the radio. An extension piece was needed to install the antennae on the left drivers side.

All 914's have two factory holes on the drivers side that are there for only one reason. Antenna installation.
One is on the drivers inner fender, it always has a rubber plug from the factory.
It's for the wire to extend into the wheelwell.
The other hole is in the vertical pinchweld behind the tire. It's for a bracket that supports the antenna. See pic.
There is also a factory diagram showing proper location of hole in drivers fender.
I'm looking for that photo.
Neither of my cars have a radio.

Mine is on the right and I have always thought it was because it was installed by the dealer and those yahoos did whatever they wanted.
