Full Version: fuel leak!

SirAndy
so, i'm walking out to go and get some coffee and breakfast and all and when i get in my car i smell gas!

hmmm, just filled her up yesterday, maybe i overspilled?

check the front trunk, nope, no gas spill ...

check under the tank (car), nope, looks good ...

check the center tunnel, nope, all fine ...

check the engine comp, no leaks anywhere ...

check under the car, just a little oily patch, does smell like fuel tho.

so i turn on the key and let the pump build up pressure, get under the car again, and voila!

there's fuel seeping out of the fuel filter ... headbang.gif

the fuel filter is installed correctly (in front of the pump) so there's no pressure on it, but still, this IS creepy ...

guess it's time to buy a fire extinguisher ...

I've never heard of a 914 without a Fire Extinguister.
Aren't they included in the factory tool kit???

That's just great. What filter are you using?

stock replacement, about 1 year old. the white square type ...

filter seems OK, i think it's the line on top, around the fitting,

Scary stuff.

Once on my previous 914 a D-Jet injector cracked (or the seal failed, I forget which) and it was pumping out fuel at a prodigious rate. By sheer luck or maybe supernatural powers I popped the engine lid to take a quick peek before driving to work that day. There was so much fuel that a fire seemed like a sure thing if the exhaust had gotten hot.

Similar thing on my current -6; the Weber banjos suddenly started dripping pretty badly (actually the short hoses between them) which spews gas all over the sheet metal right around the plugs and above the headers. unsure.gif So I just redid all that with the PMO solid fuel bars and AN6 braided hose. It cost a few hundred bucks but that beats a FIRE any day blink.gif (Plus it looks cool.)

Whilst in the engine compartment after the engine was out (like I really needed to say that last part) rolleyes.gif I decided to replace the old fuel lines (cloth covered). I just touched the ones going to & from the filter and gas began seeping. I'd been wondering where the gas smell was coming from for quite some time. Lucky I was, eh? pray.gif

I think you all have a fuel leak... The fumes are getting to you I can see wacko.gif a couple of you may also want to check the exhaust for leaks as well... blink.gif

Recently, I kept smelling gas when I was making hard left turns. I kept looking for the leak, but I couldn't find any. Then I decided to make a hard left, instantly stop and check on the gas tank. There was gas all over the filler cap, and upon closer inspection, I had apparently forgot to put on the last 8mm bolt holding the filler to the tank when I replaced the fuel gauge sender. <_<
