How can I determine some of the leading facilities or physicians in the country that deal with lung cancer patients. I have a relative in the family that was recently diagnosed and they wanted my help finding one of the better facilities.

This relative is located in the Northeast (Connecticut area).

Sorry for the off-topic post, but collectively our knowledge outside the 914 world is very diverse.

Regards,

Karl

The University of Washington is renound in its cancer center. I cannot point you in any other direction, but it might be worth your while to check it out

The Lance Armstrong Foundation may be a good source of information. The doctors involved with Lance are highly acclaimed.
TheCabinetmaker
American Lung Association
Bruce Allert
The Mayo Clinic in Minnesota. I'd heard they have had some great progress. Then, on the far Left Coast near me is Oregon Health Sciences University. They leave no stone unturned.

See if you can get more information on the particular type of lung cancer. I'm not familiar much with lung cancer, but there are a ton of different types of cancers and there are a ton of different specialists. You definitely want to find someone who has experience with whatever particular type of cancer the relative has.

My sister just had a surgery in November for a Lyeomyosarcoma (probably spelled it wrong) and after searching the web for that particular kind, there were some very good websites that came up with lists of particular medical centers specializing in that type of cancer.

Chances are, there won't be a center in your exact neighborhood that is renowned for work in the particular type of cancer you are dealing with, though it may not be necessary. If its an especially nasty kind it is probably worth it though to travel and get the most advanced treatment possible. It can really really make a difference in the likelyhood of succesful treatment.

Best wishes to your relative for a good recovery.

The two best places, IMO, are Dana Farber in Boston and Sloan Kettering in NYC. Both are cancer mills, but they know what they are doing.

I do not know, off hand, of a particular doctor for you but will ask around.

I lost my mom to lung cancer this past December on New Years Eve, she was 57. She lived in Connecticut, and when she was first diagnosed in September of last year, Sloan Kettering and The Farber institute were a couple places we briefly looked into. While her cancer was very aggressive and had spread a lot by the time she was diagnosed, and she would have been a good candidate for some expirimental treatment, she elected to go the chemo and radiation route.

Anyway, those two places have been highly recommended. Good luck to your relative, Carl, I hope some treatment helps.

So sorry for your loss Jason... really sorry.

My grandpa was diagnosed with lung cancer at the age of 79 last week. It wouldnt be a problem except he underwent an envasive open heart surgery four years ago (smoker for 60+ years). He is seeing some specialtist in southern california at Huntington Memorial Hospital in Pasadena. That probably doesnt help, but good luck with your search!

I second (or 3rd or 4th) Sloan Kettering - I know researchers there personally. Local and best around. Will make some calls for you if needed.

agree.gif My first wife was treated at Sloan, they were very good to her. They kept her going for two years but they don't always win. Best of luck, Karl.

Sorry to hear of the bad news, I lost a good friend to Lung cancer a few years ago and another to cancer just two weeks ago. I am currently the captain of the cancer drive in my neighborhood. This terrible disease effects everyones lives.
The Mayo Clinic in Rochester, MN. I know it's not out east but I think it is considered one of the best in the world.

Kellzey,
The newest Liver Cancer device we are building (Quadrafuse) was tested at Johns Hopkins among other institutions. Good luck.

Karl, sorry for the news. The main thing to consider is your confidence in whom ever you guide your treatment. In the Conn. are are several good centers, Yale/NewHaven Hospital, Hartford Hospital ever U. Conn. at Farmington. If you would wish to go further, the Dana Farber Institute in Boston is very active in treatment protocols as well as MGH. As was previously mentioned, the Memorial (Sloan Kettering) has had an agressive protocol involving nodal disection for years and have published several results of their previous protocols as well regarding ongoing protocols. I know of no single institute which has shown significantly better protocols. While some identify a specific Medical Center, almost all large protocols are national studies, involving multiple centers. This is due to the need to have significant numbers of patients enrolled for accurate results.
Bottom line, work with what ever protocol/center you feel best with.
God's Blessings

All things considered, I am told to use Sloan and not Dana Farber. The referrals I got through Sloan were to a pulmonary guy:

Abraham Sanders
525 E 68th St
New York, NY
(212) 746-2900

He is located in the Hospital for Special Surgery and works with a special cancer research group that is studying nodules in the lungs.

If you need more information, etc., let us know.

Best luck.
