OH MY, OMG,wacko.gif
Had the first test drive in the 3.0 SC turbo engined 914 this morning, I could not evaluate the event as the short gears in the tranny left me no time to check more than one gauge at a time, It feels like I have 4 first gears. 4000 to 6500 only takes a split second on boost and everything is quite exciting at that point. One run I looked at the tach, the other the boost the next the a/r, I am unable to manage much of a look at any of them because I have my hands full just keeping up with the driving duties. I have to take the short gear tranny out as it will not work with this set up, it worked great with the stock 3.0 because the RPM's had time to climb now it does not, once I hit boost I had shift as it's at redline in a split second.
I will stick the stock geared tranny in and deal with swapping out the Quaffe LSD out of the short geared tranny later. Back to the garage.
Oh ya one more thing to add, the car is an absolute monster.

Sounds like loads of fun. smile.gif

If you need more time to see what's going on at a particular load/rpm you can always use the "left-foot dyno". When I was doing the PEFI tuning on my litle -4 I would floor it and use the brakes (4x vented) to hold 2k-rpm for a few seconds while I checked a/f then let it up to 3k-rpm, hold with brake & check again, then 4k, 5k, 6k. Was also good for programming in my advance curve. If the rpm's are climbing you can't tell for sure what's happening when.

Yes I know this is hard on brakes, but pads are cheaper than dyno time. It'll be hard to hold back your turbo 3.0, but at the very least it'll give you a little extra time to see what's happening.

You have a cool project. Don't get a face cramp from that bionic grin. wink.gif

You need another set of eyes on your drives, get someone who wll read gauges. Have them note egt vs rpm vs a/f vs boost etc.....We tuned my friends 900hp 935 clone in this fashion at Watkins glen unsure.gif

A passenger could help keep an eye on whats happening. Or capture everything on a high speed camera to review at a later time. Theres just not enough time to figure out what had just happened on boost. I'm going to have to go for the tranny swap.
Just try to think how it would be with all 4 gears as fast as first gear.
I could try it in 5th if I found a clear stretch hyway.

A second person is the only way to fly...

Besides the added weight helps slow the car down a little. Oh, you could hold the ebrake on.. That might work..

Dont know.. I'd say dyno it.

I wanna see some numbers!!!!!

Congrats!

Hey David,
Head out to ST. Boni next weekend and I'll be a right-seat driver for ya biggrin.gif and then we can check out each others cars ph34r.gif

iamchappy
Paul I've been meaning to call you, I think an article on your car, Richs alien car, and mine would make a nice story all black 914's all with a different twist on power plants, your V6, Richs 928 and my 3.0 turbo, all Minnesota grown.
I put up a vote last fall to the club members, get a nice paint job or to turbo the engine. The turbo won.
Your car is beautiful, Rich and I have the rough around the edges cars but I think all of us are proud owners of our projects.
I would love to head out to see the progress you have made. Let me get that other tranny in this week and find out the source of my breather area oil leak
and I will give you a call.

Wow! That is nice. Are you planning to add an intercooler at some time? I know I'm not alone in begging you to put together some driving videos for the rest of us to enjoy. Good Work!!!! pray.gif pray.gif pray.gif

Love the pics! The installation looks super clean. smilie_pokal.gif

And, since I'm hooked on turbos, any info on any front is Officially Interesting™!

Glad to hear the test drive went well.

Andyrew
Wheres the intercooler?

Looks very very nice!
iamchappy
I dont plan on running anymore than 8lbs of boost at this time so I wouldnt gain anything by adding an intercooler, the 901 will be pushed to the limits with me running 8lbs. and my test today opened my eyes pretty wide I ran out of 4th gear awful fast, if I had thrown it into 5th with the pedal to the floor I would of found my cars top end in a flash . Its nothing like the 3.0 over 3500 rpms.

Wow -the installation is stunning. Never seen a rear bar fixed in that way before?
iamchappy
Actually the bar was unattached to make room for the intake hoses, It is just wedged in there for now, I haven't gotten to all of the little things yet, slowly but surely I will get there. I am also going to remake the crossover pipe for the turbo this one was a test fit I could use a little more room for the Flowmaster muffler which by the way is a little loud for me but sounds awesome.
Mueller
too cool, the car is going to be a blast.....

how are you getting the oil from the turbo back to the engine??
fiid
Thats the problem with the turbo at the rear of the car - getting the oil back to the engine. The oil needs to drain out of the turbo by gravity and not get backed up in there - The turbo book I have reckons that oil coming out of turbos is closer to mayonaise than oil - since it has been whipped up at speeds approaching 100,000rpm. Apparently it takes a while for the oil to settle out again which is why thegravity feed. It is okay to use a scavenger pump to send the oil back, but you want the input to that pump to be gravity fed from the turbo.
415PB
Very nice and very clean install.
fiid
BTW - The project looks fantastic - very nice job on the install.

It would be great to see some video of the thing in action, if thats possible.

Good job,

Fiid.

I agree what are you doing about oil return? Nice wastegate, I am running one of those on my Honda. What turbo are you running? Did you just modify 914-6 heat exchangers or did you do some custom headers?
tat2dphreak
that is one fine machine man!!! rocking nana.gif
iamchappy
I am using a Tilton oil pump to pump the oil out of the turbo, I am in the process of making a little sump for the oil to collect into after it drains out of the turbo. I am pumping it back into the oil tank breather hose, spent this morning cleaning up a mess and replacing the breather gasket which was leaking all over the place. The pump seems to be working fine right now without the sump but I haven't logged many miles yet.
My turbo and intake plumbing came from a BAE turbo kit for an SC which uses a Rayjay To4b Turbo charger. I am running an MSD BTM boost retard ignition, and am using a fuel enrichment injector that opens on 4lbs of boost
to make sure theres no pre-detonation by going to lean.

You know how we all always say its cheaper to buy someone elses project........ I am keeping my eye on this car!

Great job - sooooooooo cool.... pray.gif

Cost??????

Well so far at least
iamchappy
The cost is very reasonable:
Used bae turbo kit 1500 ( can be had for less but are hard to find bought mine from a guy in Hawaii)
Rebuild turbo 450
Tial Bov 220
Tial 38mm Wastegate 220
Turbo x boost controller 80
MSD BTM ignition 350
911 SC CSV injector with fuel line 130
Hobbs NO 4lbs pressure switch 30
Assorted flanges, gaskets and SS pipe for crossover pipe 120
Silicone intake and vacuum hoses and elbows 120
Tilton oil pump 200
Assorted fittings and hoses 80
Westberg A/r gauge 40
VDO boost gauge and line 60
Flow master muffler 140

Total = 3750

I will be able to reclaim a few hundred dollars by selling a few parts I no longer need so all in all not to bad .
About 31 dollars per horsepower gain. I figure I am at 300 hp at 7 or 8lbs of boost.
I will experiment with boost pressures to see what I can get away with, and if I add an 8th injector and intercooler 10lbs or more possible. that would push the engine I assume to 350 or more horsepower.

Too cool, I'm working on a similar project. are you using a stock 3.0, or have you changed comp. ratio, cams, etc? my set-up is very similar to yours, but should have to run through the trunk.

Fabulous job!

What wheel/tire/spacer/offset combination are you using?

Thanks

As far as I know the engine is a stock 79 3.0, it was rebuilt 40,000 miles ago when it had 104,000 miles on it in 98, I do know that the cams were replaced along with a lot of other stuff, unfortunately the guy I purchased the engine from had a bad car accident and I have not been able to get the paper work on the rebuild. I was lucky because it seems to be a very good running engine.

I followed a thread on the pelican board about turbo sc conversions and used that with the help of those board members, and sammyg.
I am using 944 turbo phone dial wheels 7's and 8's x 16's
225 50 16 Yokohama es100's front, 245 45 16 rears with 3/4" spacers front and rear with plenty of room.
iamchappy
I have a few test drives under my belt and the engine is very comfortable running 9 - 10lbs of boost. The tranny seems ok with it also, I had the boost controller hooked up wrong on those first test drives and was showing over 15lbs of boost at times, amazingly nothing blew up .I now know why I was blown away by the performance. The car is still very exciting at 9lbs and all the gauges read very good A/R 12.5 on boost, MSD BTM at 1.5 retard. Had to re-route the oil scavange drain lower as oil was blowing out the exhaust which seems to be remendied now. I still have the short gear tranny in with the Quaffe lsd until I get some time to swap out the gear clusters. So as for now, I will run it as is and start to enjoy this endevor.
Next the paint job.
iamchappy
oh oh, I sort of deleted the turbo 3.0 install topic while trying to post pictures.
i love porsche
hey ...it looks like my car...well.except for the whole engine thing and go really fast and stuff
