His bearings were slightly "smoothed" out, but not damaged.
Upon closer inspection I noticed that, when I popped his bearing out there was a small ridge on either side under the bearing. I asked him for his old bearings and found that they were slightly narrower than his new ones and narrower than crankcase seat they sit in. This left a slight depression where the old bearing had sat and raised the edges on the bearing seat. I believe this is why it tightened up on him. I told him to sand the ridges smooth to the same height as the rest of the seat and try the bearing again. I will find out more tomorrow.
