i put my t-stat in oil and heated it to 200° F, according to a kitchen thermometer. i couldn't see any noticeable change in the t-stat mechanism.

the little shuttle gizmo should flip to the other side when the paraffin melts. around 180F is what the article suggests.
could be yours is bad - after all - that's why you tested it, right ? because you suspected a failure? they're pretty reliable...
