Full Version: Ever wonder what happens when a 901 breaks?

I got this known dead 901 from Otmar. He had put it behind two 8" motors powered by an awesome "Godzilla" controller (shameless plug). The result is torque never before seen by a 901. Here is a picture of the carnage of 4th gear:

And here is a pic of the mess I made by assuming that the previous owner had probably drained it:

I bet that was a stinky mess.

Wierd color oil...

I think it's swepco 212 (the version of swepco renegade reccomends for V8 901 use) It's either that or head and shoulders smile.gif

I don't know exactly how much torque, you'd have to ask Otmar.

Hey Royce,
Thanks for posting the pics! I was really curious what had happened inside there.

Damn, that's pretty stripped! laugh.gif
I was thankful that it went about 15 feet before breaking and so gave me plenty of speed to coast across 3 lanes to the side of the road. It was also nice that it happened 3 blocks from home.

The torque was turned way down (only 1200 amps out of 2000 possible) since I was trying not to break it. I'm guessing it was about 600 ft /lb on the input shaft.

I thought I was in third when it broke. Back then I had a shifter but still didn't use it.

The oil should have been Redline. I think it was shockproof light since the shockproof heavy is red.

Sorry about the mess. unsure.gif

BTDT, got the stains on the wall to prove it where the fluid ran down and made a nice puddle on the floor.....

Hey Otmar, I thought about you today when I was at the metal recycler buying some aluminum....they had just finished cutting what looked like about 10 pieces of 2"x2"x8" copper for another customer...I wonder what he's using them for smile.gif
Otmar
Hmm, that copper sounds a bit fat for what I do, you never know.....

I just looked up my old posts about the breakage, back then I thought it was 4th gear.

Here's history history, 12/15/01;

Just two days ago I finally blew up the transmission in my Porsche 914. It was a usual (for me) fourth gear start right below traction limit, but 10 feet off the line there were the unusual horrendous crunching noises and the motors hit rev limit pretty quickly. Fortunately I was only a few blocks from home and a friend rope towed me crunchingly back home.

So maybe it was only 500 ft'lbs, of course back then I hadn't done any measurments on the torque.

so, you're telling us a 901 can actually handle (for a limited time) 500+ ft'lbs of torque ???

that's seems MUCH more than what is usually considered safe for a 901. more like 250+ ft'lbs ...

cool!

Only in fourth gear! Don't try this in first or second, it'll blow for sure...

Back in that post from 2001 I had also noted that I only used fourth gear and then fifth over 80 mph. Now that I have the 930 4 speed trans I only use third. It's good for over 100mph and I still can't turn the controller up all the way without breaking traction off the line. burnout.gif

Btw, Many thanks to Brad for hooking me up with that 930 box. rocking nana.gif
It's been solid for thousands of miles, and I'm turning the input shaft backwards!
fiid
Otmar - are you planning to attend any of the PCA AXs? Or one of Bowlsby's breakfasts?

I would love to see your car sometime - I'm quite fascinated.

Fiid.
bondo
How much is a 930 box anyways? I'm beginning to think I should get one, but the sticker shock scares me. what's a "good" deal for one?

--Royce
Otmar
Fiid: I'll be at the WCC AX. Will you be there? MDB2.gif
I'm still short 1000 amps, but am planning to finish a 2000 amp controller in time for WCC. Just waiting for machined copper from Florida (where's the fingers crossed smiley?)

Royce, I thought I got a great deal on the 930 with LSD. $2000
fiid
I'll try and get over for the AX. The Saturday is orientation day for the AIDS ride (WTF - they point the bike south for you :-? )

Rock on,

Fiid.
