Anyone ever do this? Anyone got a line on headers that can be used on a tail dragger?
Brad Roberts
My friend Britain is working on something similar right now. He wants to put a type4 in his 69 912. He has some links he can share with you showing some exhaust idea's and rear hanger idea's.

I thought about it for my 912. I was thinking of using the exhaust from a 411 and I was trying to see if I could adapt a bus mount to hold it up. I really didn't like the idea of using a couple long lengths of all-thread from the stock 912 mount location down to a 914 bar.

You shouldn't have this problem with a 356 since the hoop on the tranny holds everything up. Just slap a FAT fan shroud conversion on the sucker, get a header system fabbed, cut up some sheet metal, and you should be good to go.

My father's old 356 race car ran a type 4 some 20 years ago. Gary Emory of Parts Obsolete now has the car, 'cept he put one of those neat little 4 cylinder 911 motors in there.

We plan to use a 912E bar mount. Its bent upwards to meet the chassis. We also looked at the 411/412 heat exchangers and a 914 Bursch muffler.

Well, of course if you can find a 912E mount. I was trying to see if I could do a "Pick your Part" special. What are you going to weld on the frame member to accept that 912E mount? Send up pics when you get it together.
Brad Roberts
He has located just about everything we need for under 500$ All the 912E engine tin, mount, exhaust..

The plan is to slap one of the 2300cc type4 engines I have sitting around into his 69 912.

That's a sweet deal. Just switch out the thermal reactors with, what, those j-tubes for a 75-76 914?

In some ways those 912Es were just so bizarre. The mount, the upside down flanges for the muffler, the push clutch 915 box. Just weird.

fwiw, a guy named Tony Bray has posted a bit on his 2.0 t4 into a 912 conversion.
This is his web page (which get's a "connection refused" right now for some
reason -- google may have some of it cached - the car's name is gumby) He
posted quite a bit to the 914@rennlist list as he worked on it.

Anyway, iirc, he does a pretty good job of documenting how he did it (mounts,
sheet metal, etc).

I am buying Chris Campbell's 2.4/4 race motor....so I need to fab sheet metal and exhaust. I am also researching flywheel and clutch.....options.

So I guess you chaged your mind about doing a -6 conversion on it? Or is that still the long-term plan?

as far as headders go, doesn't RacerChris (tangerine racing) make a headder for the 912 and also one for bugs?

If so, I don't see why it wouldn't work for a 356...they aint cheap though tongue.gif

Couldn't the 914 header be turned around and maybe bent/cut shorter?

Chris' motor came up for sale and the hp diff between it and the 2.7 wasn't much. The oil tank on the wiring for CIS FI as opposed to carbs and no oil tank pushed it over the edge......

I still am going to use 993 wheels, flare/slam it and put in a roll cage though....

For some reason I missed this thread and you all were talking about me...

I plan to mount the type-4 motor in my 912 the same way that the guy does on that link...

http://64.171.113.210/gumby/1967_Porsche_912.htm

I have located a 912E engine mount bar and the engine tin which fits up exactly in my 912. All I need now is to figure out the header/exhaust system. I would really like to run performance headers, not sure if I am going to fab them or buy them...some are quite expensive. I just recently posted a thread on pics that I have gathered...here it is:

http://www.britainsmith.com/Porsche/Type4/index.htm

But I would also like to figure out how I am going to get heat. I have heard about electric heaters or gas heater, neither of which I have much information on.
