74 2.0. When I get up to operating temperature, the idle drops down below 1K and frequently stalls.
I need to backed out the adjustment screw, nearly all the way (until it starts to hiss at a really loud pitch) in order to get the idle up to 900-1000. This can't be the solution. Any ideas?

Have you checked the timing?

No, not yet.
I runs perfecly throughout the full RPM range in all gears, so I didn't think I should mess with it.
It just slows down at rest and stalls unless you blip it.

1. Head Temp Sensor?
2. Valve Adjustment?

Temp guage is well out of the red.
Don't know how I'd cure overheating, anyway.
Do you have something in mind?
Oil is fresh and clean.
No leaves or crap in the compartment.
Engine compartment rubber is in good condition.

Is the decel valve still in place ?

99% of the 2.0's hiss at idle when they are tuned properly.

If you need to back out the idle air bypass screw nearly all the way, the timing is off. It has to be set correctly at 27 degrees BTDC @3500 rpms with hoses off.
Setting a good idle is:
Valves adjusted
timing adjusted
hoses installed correctly
adjust air bypass and ECU when the motor is hot.

I agree, time for a tune up.

I just thought of another possibility.. could be a bad or out of adjustment throttle body switch. (It has to make the right connection in order for the knob on the ecu to do anything) If the knob on the ecu has an effect on idle, then that isn't the problem.
