The spigot that supplies the fuel to the pump is larger in early cars, and has a "sock" or screen over the pipe where it extends into the tank. The return pipe is smaller in diameter, and doesn't need or have a screen. It's easy to tell by looking inside the tank through the filler neck. Later cars ('75 and '76) have both pipes the same diameter, but the supply spigot still has the screen.
