At least one of the "speed nuts" got mangled while removing the small black trim piece on the passenger side of the engine bay. Plus, I will need some to attach the PORSCHE letters accross the engine bay.

Has anyone found a cheap source or alternative for these things?

Speed nuts are dirt cheap. Your FLAPS or hardware store will have reasonable substitutes, even.

Excellent...will check it out. Initial web search for "porsche 914 speed nuts" showed a 10 pack for $17.95 on ebay , hence the post.

I used an 8-32 (I think) nut with associated die to thread the posts

Thanks to all for the info. After checking out a lot of options, I went with #6-32 nylon nuts from Home Depot. They fit nice & snug...while I am not convinced they will screw on, they will do the trick even just pushed on. Very cheap!

I bought the 1/8th x 5/16 hex thread cutting 'speed nuts. . . box of 100 was about 6 bucks. . they also have yellow zinc metric nuts, and the serrated little lock washers close to Porsche pattern. . . For 100 bucks you can get all the metric fasteners you'll ever need and their shipping is reasonable. .
