I was just wondering if anybody knows the weight differential between porsche and subaru parts. How much lighter is a WRX motor compared to a porsche 2.0 or a 2.5 subie motor and what about transmissions??? I know there are a ton of subie transmissions to choose from but a general guess. Does anybody know the weight of their subie swapped car that we could compare to a stock 914?

You have to figure radiator, shrouding, lines, and water as well.

I would guess 150lbs over a stock 4. Maybe less. A v8 is 300lbs over a stock 4.

The Shitbox gained nearly 100 lbs over the 2.7L 6 that was in there. He did add maybe 25-30 lbs that you won't need. (ice box & water for the intercooler)
I always figured that a 6 was 80-100 lbs more than a T-4 (but worth it biggrin.gif ) The 901 trans is still in there.

I don't know exact individual component weights, but the scale near the autocross track at WCR showed my car weighing 2000 lbs. I had 1/4 tank of fuel and nothing removed from the car that day. My subaru setup is the phase II 2.5 n/a with subaru 5spd trans.

hmm I thought the stock car weighed ~2200 lbs so it sounds like the full swap is about 200lb less than a stock 914. Does anybody have a weight of a stock 914?

914-4=2090lbs stock according to Peter Russek's repair guide.

Bone Stock 73 2.0 with me and a half tank = 1005 kilos (2210lbs) I weigh 160 lb . That is on Transport Canada scales accurate to 5 kilos.

this isn't adding up
I doubt its less than a stock 4

the porsche 6 cylinder is around 400lbs
if JP and Brits car gained 70lbs

that math would show that the radiators, plumbing, etc... along with the actual motor come out to 470lbs

a stock 4cylinder air cooled is reportedly 250lbs
so the suby could be an extra 220 using this math.

Some years of teeners weighed 2240
early cars though are/can be under 2000
I used to race a stock class 1974 with about 80lbs of rollcage and an extra 40lbs of brake rotors added. I still had to add 40-50lbs of ballast to meet stock class weight of 2240 weight and that was with the heavy late doors. So my 1974 probably weighed about 2050. Reportedly some stock 1970's have been in the 1950 range.

it kinda depends on the year of chassis and even then there is some variation in stock weight

I spent a lot of time weighing things when we built the 2nd racecar. we pulled 400+ pounds out of a metal car at the time

my guess is that a suby probably adds 200lbs to a stock car

Thanks guys that sounds reasonable. adding 200 lbs for almost 3x as much hp with room to grow sounds like a decent trade off to me. 1950 Dang thats light!

my race car with all metal body panels and a very heavy -6 cylinder came in at 1837lbs.

I think I would of been about 1700 flat if I had stuck with the 4 cylinder.

I doubt that number. I don't think there ever was a stock 914 that left the factory at under 2000 lbs.

The wiegh in at the Packwood NT pretty well verifies Brant's numbers.
The shit box used to weigh in at 1710 +/- 15 lbs (no ballast)......subject to variaton in scales. At the NT it showed 1825 (10 lbs over minimum weight) with 25lbs of ballast.

The reliability of the subie & the modern EFI makes the swap worthwhile.....taint easy tho.

BTW, The 2 speed (no 1st) 901 is still in there and is holding up. It NEEDS more rear tire. 11.5 or 12 inch slicks are gonna push it another step on the road to destruction....film at 11. biggrin.gif

Going with my biceps test having recently lifted both motors. I'd say the suby motor is exactly 3.5lbs lighter than the stock vw 2.0 evilgrin.gif . Of course that doesn't include all the water & plumbing. Still my v8 conversion weighs in at 2202. It is the Buick 215 all aluminum v8 confused24.gif

Joe Sharp weighed my 1970 914 Subaru conversion in at 1889 lbs. That was with all the sound insulation removed, fiberglass bumpers, no roof, no spare tire, 3/4 tank of gas. That was back when I had the radiator in the engine bay, so now with the longer hoses and extra water add maybe 30 lbs to that. I don't know what it weighed before the conversion, so it isn't much of a useful data point. I am using a 2001 EJ25 engine (non-turbo). As I recall, the engine was something like 30 lbs lighter than a type IV.

my 75 with early bumpers, 5-lug boxster wheels/tires, 2.0FI - 2024 lbs @ ~3/8 tank

after swap to all aluminum 3.0L 4cam v6 - 2199 lbs @ ~3/8 tank

nissan engine ~400lbs loaded.

so subie under 175 lbs smile.gif
